Chapter 13 - The Choice That Cost Alejandro His Empire

Marco did not deny it.
That was the problem.
Alejandro stood across from him in the security room.
Emma was safe upstairs.
Daniel was under guard at the hospital.
Isabella had refused to leave Emma's side.
Now Alejandro faced the man who had been beside him for fifteen years.
“Your account opened the gate.”
“Yes.”
“You knew?”
“No.”
“Password?”
“Biometric.”
Alejandro's eyes narrowed.
“Then explain it.”
Marco placed his right hand on the table.
“Three weeks ago, I had surgery.”
Alejandro remembered.
Minor injury.
Marco had cut his palm badly while inspecting a warehouse.
“Clinic?”
“Yes.”
“Which one?”
“St. Vincent's.”
Same hospital where Gabriel had appeared.
Alejandro understood.
“Someone copied your biometric data.”
“Possibly.”
“Possible isn't enough.”
“You think I took Emma?”
“I think eleven men are dead.”
Marco went silent.
Alejandro continued.
“I think people I trusted have lied to me for years.”
“So now I'm one of them?”
“I don't know.”
That hurt Marco.
Alejandro saw it.
He did not take it back.
Marco nodded.
“Then lock me up.”
“What?”
“If you don't trust me, remove me.”
Alejandro stared.
“You're serious.”
“Yes.”
Marco removed his weapon.
Placed it on the table.
Then his phone.
Keys.
Security badge.
“Do what you need to do.”
Alejandro looked at the objects.
His father would have ordered Marco killed.
Immediately.
No uncertainty allowed.
Trust once questioned was trust already broken.
Alejandro remembered Emma.
A house stands because something supports it.
He pushed the weapon back.
“No.”
Marco frowned.
“Why?”
“Because loyalty cannot exist if suspicion becomes a death sentence.”
Marco said nothing.
Alejandro picked up the security badge.
“But your access is suspended.”
Marco almost smiled.
“Fair.”
They investigated.
The breach had indeed occurred through medical records.
A technician at St. Vincent's disappeared three days earlier.
The same technician had accessed Father Gabriel's charts.
Someone had infiltrated the hospital weeks before.
Dominic.
Rizzo.
Or both.
Then another blow came.
Federal agents raided three Moretti warehouses.
Legitimate warehouses.
But someone had planted contraband inside.
News stations arrived within minutes.
Alejandro watched from his study.
Reporter after reporter repeated the same phrase.
MORETTI CRIME EMPIRE UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.
Isabella entered.
“Is this them?”
“Yes.”
“What happens?”
“To the business?”
“To you.”
Alejandro turned off the television.
“They want me defending everything at once.”
“Emma.”
“Business.”
“Police.”
“Family.”
“Yes.”
She sat.
“What are you going to do?”
Alejandro looked around the study.
This room had belonged to his father.
Then him.
Three generations of Moretti decisions lived inside the walls.
He suddenly hated it.
“Leave.”
Isabella stared.
“What?”
“I'm ending it.”
“Ending what?”
“The family.”
Her expression sharpened.
“You can't just—”
“Yes, I can.”
“What does that mean?”
“Every illegal operation closes.”
“Alejandro.”
“Properties sold. Routes surrendered. Gambling rooms shut down. Protection collections ended.”
“You have men depending on you.”
“They receive severance from legitimate companies.”
“Enemies?”
“Will take territory.”
“Is that safe?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
He looked at her.
“Because if I win this war and keep everything, Emma inherits it.”
Isabella went silent.
“I spent my entire life believing I could clean it gradually.”
He shook his head.
“There is always another Rizzo. Another Dominic. Another man who thinks tradition matters more than children.”
“Alejandro…”
“I can protect Emma from one enemy.”
He looked toward the ceiling, where his daughter slept.
“I cannot protect her from an inheritance designed to create enemies forever.”
Isabella stared at him.
“You'd really walk away?”
“Yes.”
“From everything?”
“Not everything.”
Their eyes held.
He meant her.
Emma.
A different life.
Isabella understood.
She stood slowly.
“Alejandro.”
He waited.
“You asked once why I disappeared instead of trusting you.”
“Yes.”
“I was afraid you would choose this world.”
He looked down.
“I probably would have.”
“Then.”
She approached.
“But not now.”
Their faces were close.
Six years of unfinished love stood between them.
Alejandro did not reach first.
That mattered.
Isabella touched his cheek.
“I don't know if we can go back.”
“We can't.”
Her eyes filled.
“Good.”
He frowned slightly.
She smiled.
“I don't want back.”
Then she kissed him.
It was not dramatic.
No music.
No perfect cinematic moment.
Just two people who had spent six years being lied to finding each other again cautiously.
Alejandro's hand touched her waist.
Then Emma shouted from the hallway.
“Mama!”
They separated immediately.
Emma entered.
She looked at them.
Then narrowed her eyes.
“Why are you both standing weird again?”
Isabella laughed.
Alejandro sighed.
“What do you need?”
“Stone threw up.”
Alejandro stared.
“The kitten?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I don't know. I'm six.”
Alejandro rubbed his forehead.
“Call Maria.”
Emma ran away.
Isabella laughed harder.
Alejandro looked at her.
“This is my life now?”
“If you're lucky.”
He smiled.
For several minutes, the world almost felt safe.
Then Marco entered without his badge.
“We have a bigger problem.”
Alejandro turned.
“What?”
“Dominic contacted the captains.”
“Which?”
“All.”
“And?”
“He's offering them control if they reject your shutdown.”
Alejandro's expression hardened.
“How many accepted?”
“Four.”
“Names.”
Marco listed them.
Alejandro was not surprised by three.
The fourth hurt.
Vincent.
The man who told Alejandro he had changed.
“What else?”
“Dominic announced a council meeting tomorrow.”
“He has no authority.”
“He says you abandoned the family.”
Alejandro looked at Isabella.
She understood.
The war was no longer hidden.
Alejandro's decision had forced everyone to choose.
Power.
Or a future without it.
Marco said, “If you walk away now, Dominic takes everything.”
“I know.”
“He'll become worse than Vittorio.”
“I know.”
“Then maybe you can't walk away yet.”
Alejandro looked toward Emma's drawing on the desk.
Three people.
One house.
“You want me to fight for a throne I'm trying to destroy.”
“I want you to make sure nobody sits on it afterward.”
Alejandro understood.
He could not simply surrender.
He had to dismantle the structure carefully enough that Dominic could not use it.
That would require confronting the captains.
Closing accounts.
Exposing crimes.
Potentially cooperating with authorities.
Possibly going to prison.
Isabella saw the thought.
“No.”
Alejandro looked at her.
“If that's the cost—”
“No.”
“I have done things.”
“You have.”
“I don't get to erase them because I'm a father.”
Emma returned carrying the kitten.
“Dad?”
He looked down.
“Yes?”
“Are you going away?”
Alejandro froze.
“How much did you hear?”
“Enough.”
Isabella sighed.
Emma's eyes filled.
“You promised you'd come back.”
Alejandro crouched.
“I did.”
“If you go to jail, that's not coming back.”
Nobody spoke.
Alejandro took her hands.
“Sometimes doing the right thing has consequences.”
“I don't like consequences.”
“Neither do I.”
Emma began crying quietly.
Alejandro pulled her into his arms.
She whispered, “I just found you.”
His eyes closed.
“I know.”
“And now you're giving everything away.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Alejandro looked at Isabella.
Then Marco.
Then his daughter.
“So you never have to live like me.”
Emma hugged him tighter.
Later that night, Alejandro signed documents transferring control of legitimate Moretti businesses into independent trusts.
Employee ownership.
Family protections.
Education funds for the children of the eleven dead men.
He sold weapons routes to nobody.
He destroyed them.
He gave prosecutors anonymous locations of criminal stockpiles.
By dawn, millions of dollars in old Moretti power had vanished.
Marco watched signatures stack.
“You realize people will call this weakness.”
Alejandro placed down the pen.
“They always do when a man stops being useful to their violence.”
At eight in the morning, Dominic called.
“You've lost your mind.”
Alejandro smiled.
“No.”
“You're destroying our name.”
“No.”
“What do you call this?”
Alejandro looked at Emma asleep on the couch beside the kitten.
“Ending a curse.”
Dominic's voice became cold.
“Then I'll end it for you.”
The line disconnected.
Five minutes later, alarms sounded.
Not at the house.
At the cemetery.
Alejandro's mother's grave had been opened overnight.
Inside the empty hole lay a black envelope.
One message.
BRING EMMA TO THE COUNCIL OR ELEVEN MORE FAMILIES BURY THEIR FATHERS.
Alejandro stared.
May you like
Dominic had finally made the threat direct.
And for the first time, Alejandro considered walking into the Moretti council with his daughter beside him—not as bait, but as the reason the old empire would end.
