Chapter 3 - MID-AIR AMBUSH

The Bombardier Global 7500 climbed through the storm clouds, leveling out at forty thousand feet above the dark, rain-swept expanse of Pennsylvania.

Inside the cabin, the heavy velvet curtains were drawn. Mateo sat tucked securely into a wide leather seat, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, happily chewing on a warm bagel while Khloe sat opposite him, showing him simple signs for sky, star, and water. The boy was fascinated, his small hands imitating her gestures with eager precision.

Silas sat in the adjacent seat, a glass of untouched scotch resting on the table beside him. He watched every single gesture Khloe made, his intense grey eyes recording every finger movement.

"Like this?" Silas asked suddenly, holding up his large, scarred hand and awkwardly curling his fingers to mirror Khloe’s sign for safe.

"Close," Khloe corrected gently, leaning across the small table. "Keep your thumb tucked against your palm. If your thumb sticks out, it means something entirely different."

Silas adjusted his thumb immediately. He looked at his son and executed the sign.

Mateo looked up from his bagel, saw his father’s large hand forming the shape, and his eyes widened. A tiny, faint dimple appeared on the boy's cheek. He raised his hand and signed back: Papa. Safe.

Silas’s chest heaved. A thick, emotional breath escaped his lips, and he turned his face slightly toward the window to hide the sudden glaze of tears in his eyes.

"He hasn't called me 'Papa' since the funeral," Silas murmured, his voice tight.

"He wanted to," Khloe said softly. "He just didn't know how to reach you without words."

Before Silas could answer, the aircraft violently lurched.

It wasn't ordinary atmospheric turbulence. The jet shuddered with a sudden, metallic shudder, followed by a dull, explosive thud near the lower baggage compartment. The cabin lights flickered violently, plunged into total darkness for two agonizing seconds, before popping back on under dim red emergency illumination.

"Victor!" Silas barked, instantly standing up and stepping over Mateo’s chair, shielding the boy with his massive frame.

Victor rushed out of the cockpit area, his hand already pressed against the holstered firearm beneath his suit jacket. "Sir! The pilot says we just lost main generator power. An explosive decompression warning went off in the lower cargo bay!"

"Explosive?" Khloe gasped, instinctively pulling Mateo into her arms as the aircraft dipped steeply to the left.

"It wasn't mechanical," Victor growled, his face grim. "Someone planted a breach charge on one of the baggage crates before we took off from Teterboro. They didn't want to blow the plane out of the sky—they wanted to force an emergency landing!"

"The Moretti syndicate," Silas snarled, his eyes turning into pure, lethal flint. "They knew I was flying Mateo out of New York tonight."

Suddenly, the pilot’s voice came over the intercom, tight with panic. "Mr. Costello! Hydraulic pressure in system two is dropping fast! I have to set us down at the nearest airstrip—an abandoned military strip in western Pennsylvania! We have ten minutes!"

Mateo, feeling the terrifying vibration of the plunging jet and seeing the flashing red emergency lights, began to panic again. He gripped Khloe’s sweater, his small body trembling violently.

Khloe held him tight, her hands moving rapidly against his chest under the dim emergency lights: Breathe. Heavy storm outside. Papa and I are here. Hold fast.

Silas looked down at her—at this civilian flight attendant who, instead of screaming or panicking, was using her body as a shield to keep his deaf child calm while their plane fell from forty thousand feet.

"Victor," Silas ordered, pulling a heavy black handgun from a hidden compartment beneath his seat. "Prepare for a dark landing. If Moretti’s men are waiting on that runway, none of them leave alive."
