Chapter 2 - HANDS IN THE DARK

Silas Costello’s eyes darkened, a dangerous flare of tension stiffening his posture. "Be very careful what you assume about my family, miss."
Victor moved half a step forward, a heavy threat in his body language. Gemma shrank back into the galley, holding her breath in terror.
Khloe didn't move an inch. She didn't look at Victor, nor did she flinch under Silas's imposing glare. She kept her focus entirely on four-year-old Mateo, whose chest was rattling with breathless, terrified sobs.
Instead of speaking, Khloe raised her hands to the child's eye level.
She didn't touch him. She didn't rush. With precise, deliberate grace, she formed her hands into American Sign Language, tapping her thumb gently against her chest, then extending both open hands forward with soft, rhythmic movements.
Safe. Here. Help.
The child’s thrashing instantly stopped.
It was as if an invisible switch had been flipped inside the cabin. Mateo’s bloodshot eyes locked onto Khloe’s moving fingers. His high-pitched screams cut off into a tiny, shuddering breath. He stared at her hands, his lower lip trembling, his tiny mouth dropping open in sheer astonishment.
Khloe smiled—not a polite customer-service smile, but the warm, grounding smile she had used a thousand times with her sister Sarah when thunder struck their childhood home.
She signed again, slow and clear: Airplane big. Noise inside ears. You okay. I see you.
Mateo gasped, a long, shaky exhale escaping his tiny lungs. Slowly, hesitatingly, he lifted his own small, chubby right hand from his father's lapel. He touched his thumb to his index finger, tapping them together twice, then pressed his hand flat against his chest.
Hurt. Scared. Airplane.
I know, Khloe signed back gently. Cabin pressure changes. Ear pain.
She reached into her apron pocket, pulled out a small, soft chewable ear-pressure relief aid, and held it out on her flat palm. She pointed to her own jaw, moving it in a chewing motion, then signed: Chew this. Pain goes away.
Mateo reached out with trembling fingers, took the gel chew, and popped it into his mouth. As his jaw began to move, equalizing the air pressure in his inner ears, the sharp agony behind his eyes faded. He leaned his small head forward and pressed his forehead directly against Khloe’s hands, releasing a deep, weary sigh.
Silence fell over the cabin. The only sound was the steady hum of the jet's auxiliary power unit and the rain beating against the outer hull.
Silas Costello stood frozen in the center of the aisle, his arms still supporting his son, staring at Khloe as if she had just performed a miracle out of thin air.
"He's... deaf?" Silas whispered, the raw, gravelly edge in his voice cracking for the first time.
"Profoundly," Khloe said quietly, gently smoothing Mateo’s dark hair as the boy relaxed against her knee. "He didn't know why his ears hurt, Mr. Costello. He couldn't hear the engines starting. He was trapped in darkness, and no matter how loudly you spoke, he only saw a shadow towering over him."
Silas stared down at his son, his face turning ghostly pale. The powerful crime boss, who controlled shipping docks, union halls, and hundreds of armed men across the Midwest, looked completely shattered.
"His mother... died three months ago," Silas admitted softly, his throat working as he swallowed hard. "She handled his care. He stopped making sounds after the funeral. I thought... I thought he was just grieving. I thought he was defying me."
"He was frightened," Khloe said gently, standing up slowly so as not to startle the boy. "Deaf children don't process fear through sound. They process it through sight and touch."
Mateo reached out, grabbing the hem of Khloe’s navy uniform jacket with his tiny hand, refusing to let go.
Silas looked from his son's small hand to Khloe's calm, steady face. "What is your name?"
May you like
"Khloe Gallagher, sir."
"You ride in the cabin with us tonight, Khloe," Silas commanded, his voice returning to its authoritative weight, though the cold hostility was entirely gone. "Sit across from him. Teach me what those hands mean."
