Chapter 9 - THE CONCLAVE OF BLOOD

The Grand Plaza Hotel in downtown Manhattan was locked down tighter than a vault.
It was 11:00 p.m. on Friday night. Inside the soundproofed, subterranean ballroom, the High Council of the Syndicate was in full session. Twelve powerful family leaders sat around a massive oval mahogany table, surrounded by fifty heavily armed bodyguards.
At the head of the table sat Marcus, dressed in a pristine white suit, swirling a glass of scotch with an air of absolute triumph.
"With deep regret," Marcus was saying, his voice carrying fake sorrow across the silent room, "I must report that our beloved heir, Leonardo Moretti, was ambushed and killed by rival factions during Tuesday’s storm. His father, Don Vincenzo, is in critical condition and unable to rule. As per our sacred laws, I offer myself to step into the mantle of leadership to preserve our empire."
Nods of agreement murmured through the older family heads.
"A tragic loss," an elderly boss grunted. "Is there any doubt of his demise?"
"None," Marcus lied cleanly, a dark smile playing on his lips. "His body was swallowed by the river. We have total control now."
"Is that so, Marcus?"
A deep, commanding voice boomed from the back of the ballroom.
Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.
The massive double doors smashed open. Leonardo Moretti walked into the grand room.
He was dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his posture tall, imposing, and completely regal. Behind him walked a dozen heavily armed Moretti loyalists—and at his side, wearing an elegant dark dress, walked me.
Gasps echoed through the room. Guns were instantly drawn on all sides.
Marcus paled, dropping his glass of scotch. It shattered loudly on the marble floor. "Impossible!" he hissed, staggering back. "Kill him! He's an imposter!"
"Stand down!" Leonardo’s voice cut through the air like a whip, radiating pure, unquestioned authority. He didn't even flinch at the guns pointed at his heart.
He walked calmly up the center aisle, stopping right across the long mahogany table from Marcus.
"You tried to murder me in my own home," Leonardo said coldly, his voice echoing in the dead silence. "You bypassed the security grid. You set up my family. And you tried to frame an innocent civilian to cover your cowardice."
"Lies!" Marcus shouted, looking around wildly at the other bosses. "He has no proof! He’s trying to seize total control!"
Leonardo looked back at me and gave a simple nod.
I stepped forward, entirely unfazed by the dozens of weapons aimed in our direction. I pulled out a sleek digital tablet, connecting it to the high-definition projection system used for council presentations.
With a single tap, the recorded audio of Marcus’s phone call screamed across the ballroom’s high-end speakers:
"Make sure the maid is left inside to take the blame as an inside accessory. Leave no other survivors."
The room went deadly silent.
The old family heads turned their gazes onto Marcus, their expressions instantly hardening into utter disgust and fury. In the syndicate, ambition was tolerated; dishonorable treason and framing civilians was punished by death.
"Marcus Vance," the eldest boss spoke, his voice ice-cold. "You have violated the highest code of the Conclave."
Marcus knew it was over. In a final, desperate act of madness, he whipped a hidden pistol from his coat, aiming it directly at my chest. "If I go down, the girl dies!"
BANG.
A single shot rang out.
Marcus froze. A small, perfect red hole appeared in the center of his forehead. His eyes rolled back, and he collapsed heavily onto the grand table, dead before he hit the wood.
Leonardo slowly lowered his smoking gun, his eyes cold as ice. He didn't even look at Marcus's corpse.
Instead, he turned to face the entire assembly of mafia leaders, slipping his weapon back into his shoulder holster.

"My father is recovering," Leonardo announced, his commanding voice filling every corner of the vast room. "And as of tonight... I am taking total command of the Moretti family. Does anyone present object?"
Not a single man moved. One by one, the twelve powerful family heads stood up and bowed their heads in absolute submission to the new Don.
