Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF SURVIVAL

By noon, my world had completely inverted.
A black town car picked up my sister Sophie from her modest apartment and transferred her to the top floor of the premier medical facility in New York State. When I visited her that afternoon, she was resting in a luxury private suite that looked more like a five-star hotel than a hospital room. Top-tier specialists were already reviewing her charts. The transplant coordinator who had been cold to me for months was now bowing and offering me coffee every ten minutes.
The debt was gone. The fear that had squeezed my chest for three years had vanished in a single sentence from Leonardo Moretti.
But safety in the Moretti orbit was an illusion.
When I returned to my small apartment that evening to pack some clothes for Sophie, I found my front door slightly deadbolted... unlocked.
My heart plummeted into my stomach.
I backed away slowly down the hallway, but before I could turn toward the stairs, a hand slammed against the wall behind me.
A tall man in an expensive gray suit stepped into the hallway light. He had slicked-back hair and a faint scar running along his jawline. Marcus. The man Leonardo had accused of treason.
"Leora Vance," Marcus said, his voice smooth as oil, laced with an unsettling calm. Two large men flanked him in the tight corridor. "The hardworking maid of Blackwood Estate."
"I don't know who you are," I said, trying to keep my voice steady, though my knees felt like water. "Get away from me or I'll call the police."
Marcus chuckled softly, a sound entirely devoid of humor. "The police? Sweetheart, the police don't come into this building unless we invite them. Now, let's skip the theatricals. We checked the security logs at the estate. You logged in for the night shift, but you never logged out. And my men found tire tracks leading away from the south gate matching a 2014 Honda Civic."
He took a step closer, towering over me. The scent of expensive cologne mixed with heavy tobacco surrounded him.
"Where is Leonardo?" Marcus asked softly.
"I don't know," I lied, staring directly into his eyes. "He was bleeding. He stole my car at gunpoint and drove away. He left me in the woods."
Marcus smirked, leaning down so his mouth was inches from my ear. "You're a bad liar, Leora. A girl whose sister just had five million dollars deposited into a medical trust doesn't look like a victim of a carjacking."
My breath hitched. They were already monitoring the financial networks.
"Leonardo is a dead man walking," Marcus whispered cold bloodedly. "His father is old and sick, and by tomorrow night, I will control the entire syndicate. You saved a corpse, little girl. And now, you're going to tell me where he's hiding, or your sister's brand-new medical trust won't mean a thing."
A cold spike of terror hit me. "Don't touch her."
"Then talk."
Suddenly, the silent hallway exploded.
The lightbulb in the ceiling shattered as a silenced gunshot echoed. One of Marcus's guards crumpled to the floor with a heavy thud.
Before Marcus could even draw his weapon, the fire exit door crashed open. Leonardo stepped into the dim hallway, clad in a sleek black suit, holding a silenced pistol. His movement was smooth, lethal, completely betraying the fact that he had been near death hours prior.
"Get away from her, Marcus," Leonardo said, his voice dropping to a terrifying sub-zero tone.
May you like
Marcus whirled around, using the second guard as a human shield, drawing his own gun. "Leonardo! You should be dead!"
"I don't die easily," Leonardo replied coldly. "And you made a fatal mistake coming after what's mine."
