Chapter 5 - The War for Providence

The public humiliation of Vivien Walsh was the final straw for the desperate Walsh family. Realizing they were facing total financial ruin and public disgrace, Connor and his father made a fatal error: they sought help from Luca’s fiercest rival, Matteo Vance—a ruthless mob boss from South Boston who had been trying to control the Rhode Island ports for over a decade.
Matteo saw Connor’s anger as an opportunity. He offered to wipe out the Walsh family’s debts in exchange for the rights to the Providence waterfront land—rights that Connor claimed he could force Hannah to sign back over through intimidation.
Two weeks after the party, the storm finally hit.
Luca was away in New York attending an emergency meeting with his shipping union leaders. Hannah remained at the Narragansett manor under the protection of Luca's head of security, Marco, and six heavily armed guards.
Around midnight, a violent thunderstorm battered the coast. Thunder cracked across the sky, drowning out the sound of three dark SUVs pulling up to the estate's rear gates.
Inside her bedroom, Hannah was reading when the power suddenly cut out, plunging the grand estate into total darkness. Seconds later, the harsh sound of gunfire echoed from the lower courtyard.
Hannah’s heart leaped into her throat. Nero, the German Shepherd, stood by her bed, low growls rumbling in his chest.
The bedroom door burst open. Marco stepped in, a drawn handgun in his hand and blood grazing his temple. "Hannah! We have a breach! Matteo Vance’s men have cut the lines and bypassed the perimeter! We need to get you to the panic room now!"
"Where is Luca?" she cried over the sound of breaking glass downstairs.
"He’s on his way back—he took a helicopter the moment the perimeter alarm triggered his phone, but he’s ten minutes out!" Marco urged, grabbing her arm. "Move!"
They rushed down the darkened hallway, guarded by two men. But as they reached the central gallery, heavy footsteps echoed up the grand staircase.
Four men armed with automatic weapons stepped into the light of the lightning flashes illuminating the tall windows. Leading them was Connor Walsh, holding a pistol with shaking hands, his eyes wild and maniacal.
"Hannah!" Connor screamed over the roar of thunder. "Get away from them!"
Marco immediately pushed Hannah behind him, firing two shots that drove Vance's mercenaries back behind the stone pillars. A brutal firefight erupted in the gallery, bullets shattering priceless oil paintings and spraying wood splinters into the air.
"Connor, stop this!" Hannah yelled from behind Marco, holding onto Nero’s collar to keep the dog from charging into the gunfire. "You're going to get yourself killed!"
"You ruined my life!" Connor shrieked, creeping around a pillar, his face twisted in madness. "My dad is in prison! My family is bankrupt! All because you couldn't just stay quiet and be a good little wife! Sign the Providence land over to Vance, or none of us walk out of here alive!"
"She isn't signing anything," a cold, lethal voice echoed from the dark shadows behind Connor.
Connor froze.
From the balcony above the grand staircase, Luca Belandi stepped out of the darkness. His black coat was soaked with rain, his dark hair plastered to his forehead, and in his right hand, he held a heavy silenced pistol. He looked like an avenging angel of death descending straight from the storm.
Before Vance’s men could react, Luca fired three precise shots. The three mercenaries collapsed instantly.
Connor spun around, raising his gun toward Luca with a terrified scream.
BANG.
Luca didn't miss. The bullet struck Connor’s shoulder, knocking him off his feet and sending his gun skittering across the polished marble floor.
Connor hit the ground, groaning in pain, clutching his bleeding shoulder as the remaining mercenaries fled down the stairs, realizing their employer had lost.
Luca walked down the stairs slowly, unhurried, his heavy boots clicking against the marble until he stood over Connor. He kicked Connor’s fallen gun away, his dark eyes devoid of any mercy.
"I gave you a chance to walk away with your life, boy," Luca said softly, pointing the barrel of his gun directly at Connor's forehead. "You chose to enter my home and threaten the woman I love."
Connor wept, clutching his shoulder, shrinking into the floor. "Please... Luca, please... don't kill me... please..."
Hannah watched from the hallway. She saw the lethal intent in Luca’s eyes. She knew Connor deserved whatever punishment the law or Luca dealt him, but she also knew that if Luca executed a defenseless man in front of her, it would stain his soul forever.
"Luca!" she called out, stepping out from behind Marco.
Luca’s finger paused on the trigger. He didn't lower the gun, but he looked toward her.
"Don't," Hannah said gently, walking toward him through the settling gunsmoke. "He isn't worth it. He’s already lost everything. Don't waste a single second of your life carrying his blood."
Luca stared into her clear, steady eyes. The fierce, terrifying fire in his chest slowly began to recede, replaced by the profound, overwhelming love he felt for this extraordinary woman.
He slowly lowered the gun.
"Marco," Luca commanded, without looking down at Connor. "Call the federal agents. Hand Connor Walsh and Matteo Vance’s men over for armed robbery, attempted murder, and conspiracy. Make sure he spends the next twenty years in a maximum-security cell."
"Yes, boss," Marco replied, taking control of the bleeding man on the floor.
Luca dropped his weapon onto a nearby table and walked toward Hannah. Without saying a word, he pulled her into a fierce, desperate embrace, burying his face in her hair as the rain continued to pour outside the shattered windows.
"Are you hurt?" he whispered, his voice trembling slightly—a rare sign of vulnerability from a man who feared nothing.

"I'm fine," Hannah whispered back, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. "Because you came back for me."
"I will always come back for you, Hannah," Luca swore into the dark. "Always."
