Chapter 4 - The Lion’s Court

Over the next three weeks, Hannah’s world transformed completely.
The quiet schoolteacher who had spent years hiding in the shadows of other people's demands began to discover her own voice. Guided by Luca’s top legal team, she formally dissolved her marriage to Connor, exposed her aunt’s fraudulent management of her father's estate, and reclaimed full ownership of the lucrative Providence waterfront land.
During the days, she stayed at the Narragansett estate, working on her lesson plans and walking along the rugged cliffs with Luca's giant German Shepherd, Nero, who had taken an immediate, fiercely protective liking to her.
In the evenings, Luca returned from his office in Boston. They ate dinner together in the warm dining room, talking for hours. She learned that behind his terrifying reputation, Luca was a man of intense intellect, deep loyalty, and surprising loneliness. He had inherited his family's empire after his elder brother was betrayed and killed years ago, forcing him to become a monster so he could protect the people he cared about.
"They call me a villain, Hannah," Luca said one night over wine, looking out at the dark ocean. "And in many ways, I am. I have done terrible things to keep peace in this city."
"A villain doesn't dance with a crying stranger in front of two hundred people," Hannah replied softly, leaning across the table to place her hand over his. "A villain doesn't rebuild a broken woman's life just because he can."
Luca looked down at her small, soft hand resting over his scarred knuckles. His gaze lifted to hers, dark and intense. "I didn't rebuild you, Hannah. You were always strong. You just needed someone to hold the light while you found your way out of the dark."
The emotional pull between them grew stronger with every passing day, a quiet, magnetic current that neither could deny. But just as Hannah felt herself falling deeply for the dangerous man who had saved her, the shadows of the underworld reached out to drag them into a trap.
It was a Thursday evening when Luca hosted a private gathering of regional business leaders and political figures at his estate—a display of power to finalize the acquisition of the Providence harbor development.
Hannah wore an elegant emerald-green silk dress that Luca had gifted her. She moved through the grand ballroom with a new, quiet grace, no longer the timid woman who had let people step on her. Guests who had once ignored her at school board meetings now bowed their heads, whispering respectfully as she passed.
Suddenly, a commotion broke out near the grand entrance.
Hannah turned to see her former mother-in-law, Vivien Walsh, marching into the foyer, flanked by a sleazy tabloid reporter and two security guards who were struggling to hold her back politely without causing a scene.
"Where is she?!" Vivien shrieked, her expensive makeup running with sweat. "Where is the little whore who destroyed my family?!"
The room fell dead silent.
Vivien spotted Hannah and pointed a shaking, diamond-encrusted finger at her. "Look at her! Sitting in a mafia fortress, wearing green silk while my son is ruined! She planned this! She was sleeping with Belandi before the wedding! She milked my family for status and then ran to her gangster lover!"
The reporter’s camera flashed repeatedly, catching the dramatic scene.
Hannah felt a spike of panic, but before she could shrink back, a heavy hand rested gently on her waist. Luca stepped up beside her, his presence instantly commanding the room.
"Vivien," Luca spoke, his voice dripping with icy contempt. "You are trespassing."
"Call the police!" Vivien screamed at the reporter. "Write it down! Luca Belandi stole my son's wife to grab the Providence land! It’s extortion!"
Hannah looked at the whispering crowd, then at the flashing camera. Old fears threatened to surface—the fear of scandal, of ruined reputation, of being judged by society.
Then she looked at Luca, who was preparing to order his men to remove Vivien violently, a move that would only fuel the media circus.
No, Hannah thought. Not anymore.
She took a step forward, slipping out from under Luca’s arm, and stood directly between Luca and Vivien.
"You're wrong, Vivien," Hannah said, her voice clear, calm, and loud enough for every guest and reporter to hear.
Vivien glared at her. "What did you say?"
"I said you're wrong," Hannah repeated, holding her chin high. "Your son didn't lose his business because of a mafia plot. He lost it because he was a foolish, cruel man who publicly humiliated his wife on their wedding night. He lost it because his father used fraudulent loans to cover his gambling debts. And you lost your status because you watched your son break a woman's heart and laughed about it."
The crowd gasped softly.
Hannah took another step toward Vivien, her eyes flashing with fierce authority. "I am not a victim, and I am certainly not a prize to be stolen. I left Connor because he proved himself worthless. And if I am standing in Luca Belandi’s house tonight, it is because he is twice the man your son will ever be."
Luca stood behind her, his eyes widened slightly in absolute awe as he watched the quiet schoolteacher dominate the room with pure, radiant majesty.
Vivien opened her mouth, but no words came out. The sheer weight of Hannah’s dignity had completely stripped her of her rage.
Luca stepped forward, putting a gentle hand on Hannah's shoulder before looking at his security team. "Escort Mrs. Walsh outside. And take the reporter's camera. Delete the footage, pay him double his fee for his trouble, and ensure he understands the consequences of writing fiction about my guests."

As Vivien was led away in utter disgrace, the ballroom erupted into quiet, respectful applause.
Luca leaned down to Hannah’s ear, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. "You are incredible, Hannah Miller."
