Chapter 7 - The Trap is Set

By 8:00 AM the next morning, the sun was shining brightly over Fifth Avenue, but inside the glass-walled offices of Vance & Associates in downtown Manhattan, the atmosphere was freezing.
David Vance sat behind his polished mahogany desk, tapping his fountain pen impatiently against a legal notepad. He had just finished drafting the preliminary draft of his new Family Court petition against Daniel Carter, feeling entirely pleased with himself. In his mind, Daniel was a wounded, isolated giant ripe for public humiliation.
Knock. Knock.
The frosted glass door of his office swung open without waiting for permission.
Marcus stepped into the room, flanked by two towering men in tailored black suits who looked like they had just walked off an active combat zone. They didn't look like process servers; they looked like executioners.
David dropped his pen, standing up behind his desk with a nervous laugh. “What is the meaning of this? You can't just walk into a private law office—”
“Mr. Vance,” Marcus interrupted, his voice flat, heavy, and completely devoid of emotion. He walked forward, tossing a thick manila folder directly onto David’s desk. It landed with a heavy thud, scattering several sheets of paper.
David looked down at the folder, his brow furrowing. “What is this?”
“That is a complete forensic audit of your personal finances, offshore accounts in the Caymans, unpaid gambling markers in Atlantic City, and three active federal investigations regarding wire fraud involving client trust accounts,” Marcus recited smoothly, pulling a small silver pocket watch from his vest, flipping it open, and checking the time. “Mr. Carter sends his regards.”
All the color drained from David’s face. He snatched the top document from the folder, his eyes scanning the account numbers, wire transfers, and loan shark notices with mounting horror. These weren't rumors or rough estimates; these were verified bank records, signed wire receipts, and intercepted communications that could land him in federal prison for twenty years.
“This... this is an illegal breach of privacy!” David stammered, his voice cracking as cold sweat beaded on his forehead. “He can’t use this! I’ll file an injunction!”
“You won't file anything,” Marcus said, stepping closer until he was towering directly over David’s desk, his dark eyes boring into the lawyer’s soul. “You have exactly two hours to withdraw your custody petition, sign a permanent legal waiver relinquishing any claim to the Carter family trust, and board a one-way flight to the Cayman Islands to liquidate your shell companies before the U.S. Attorney’s office receives copies of this audit.”
David’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of his desk to steady himself, realizing with terrifying clarity that he had just kicked a sleeping dragon—and the dragon had casually burned his entire life to ash in twelve hours.

“If I... if I sign the waiver,” David whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably, “does Daniel promise to bury the audit?”
“Mr. Carter doesn't negotiate with parasites,” Marcus replied coldly, turning toward the door. “He just exterminates them. You have two hours, counselor.”
