Chapter 6 - Secrets in the Study

The private study was warm, illuminated only by the amber glow of a brass desk lamp and the flickering flames of a wood fire burning quietly in the stone hearth.

Elise sat in one of the deep leather armchairs by the fireplace, holding a cup of hot cocoa Mrs. Gable had left on the tray before retiring. Daniel poured two fingers of dark amber bourbon into a heavy crystal glass, swirling the liquor slowly before sitting down in the opposite chair.

“David Vance called today,” Daniel said abruptly, breaking the quiet crackle of the fire.

Elise paused, her mug halfway to her lips. She set it down on the side table. “Claire’s brother?”

“He’s trying to file a new custody petition,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a cold, dangerous register. “He thinks because I’m a single father living behind iron gates, a family court judge will hand over my daughters—and Claire’s personal trust—to him. He’s a parasite who hasn't worked an honest day in his life, and he’s using my girls as leverage to dig himself out of his gambling debts.”

“Can he actually win?” Elise asked, her brow furrowing with genuine concern.

“In family court? Anything is possible if you have a corrupt judge and a sympathetic media narrative,” Daniel said, taking a slow sip of his bourbon. He stared into the amber liquid as if searching for answers in the glass. “When Claire died... I shut down. I didn't want the world looking at my family. I built this fortress because I thought walls could protect us. But David knows how to weaponize my isolation against me.”

Elise leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees.

“Walls don't protect you, Mr. Carter,” she said softly. “They just make it easier for people on the outside to throw stones without you seeing where they’re coming from.”

Daniel looked up, his slate-gray eyes locking onto hers. “And what would you do if you were in my place?”

“I wouldn't hide,” Elise answered instantly, without a second of hesitation. “I’d drag him out into the light. If he’s got gambling debts and shady offshore accounts, his entire life is built on glass. People who live in glass houses don't throw lawsuits—unless they’re too stupid to realize their own windows are wide open.”

Daniel stared at her, stunned. Her words weren't just brave; they were strategically brilliant. For months, his corporate legal team had been playing defense—blocking subpoenas, sealing records, trying to sweep David’s threats under the rug. They had never considered turning the offensive weapon back on David’s own financial ruin.

A slow, terrifyingly subtle smile spread across Daniel’s face—the same smile he used right before crushing a hostile takeover in the corporate market.

“Marcus,” Daniel called out toward the open study door.

Within two seconds, Marcus stepped silently out of the shadows of the hallway, standing at attention like a military officer. “Boss?”

“Pull every financial record, bank statement, and gaming debt associated with David Vance over the last five years,” Daniel ordered, his voice crisp and authoritative. “I want every offshore shell company, every bounced check, and every shady real estate loan cross-referenced by dawn.”

“Consider it done,” Marcus nodded, a grim smile touching his lips before he melted back into the hallway shadows.

Elise watched the interaction, her eyes wide. “You’re not wasting any time.”

“In business, and in war, hesitation is fatal,” Daniel said, setting his glass down on the table. He looked across the fire at Elise, his gaze softening just a fraction. “Thank you, Elise. I didn't hire you to be a tactical advisor, but it seems I’m getting more than my money's worth.”

“You’re paying for elite infant care, Mr. Carter,” Elise smiled, leaning back in her chair. “Everything else is just premium package features.”
