Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Boardroom

The executive conference room on the forty-fifth floor of Carter Global Tower overlooked a rain-slicked Manhattan skyline. Below, the city traffic blurred into a river of red and white lights, but inside the glass-walled fortress, the atmosphere was as cold and sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel.

Daniel Carter sat at the head of the obsidian conference table, his tailored charcoal suit jacket buttoned, his fingers steepled in front of him. Around the table sat his board of directors—elderly, conservative men who controlled billions in shipping and real estate assets, men who viewed Daniel’s recent grief not as a human tragedy, but as a corporate liability.

“The Atlantic shipping routes are bleeding revenue, Daniel,” Arthur Sterling, the senior board member, said smoothly, leaning forward and resting his weathered hands on the wood. “Ever since the tragic passing of Mrs. Carter, your focus has been... fragmented. The investors are getting nervous. They want to know if you’re stepping back from day-to-day operations.”

Daniel didn't flinch. His expression remained a mask of carved granite, but his eyes flashed with a dangerous, razor-sharp intelligence that instantly reminded everyone in the room why he was the apex predator of the New York market.

“My focus on Carter Global is absolute, Arthur,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant register that commanded the entire room. “The Q3 logistics numbers will be finalized by Friday. If any investor doubts my ability to steer this company, they are free to sell their shares at market value today. I’ll buy every single one of them out myself.”

A heavy, uncomfortable silence settled over the table. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. Everyone knew Daniel had the liquidity and the ruthless streak to back up the threat.

Before Arthur could formulate a diplomatic recovery, the heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom clicked open.

Marcus, Daniel’s head of security and personal fixer, strode into the room without waiting for permission. He didn't care about corporate decorum; his face was carved out of stone, and his eyes were darting with suppressed urgency. He walked straight up to Daniel’s chair and leaned down, whispering directly into his ear.

“Boss, we have a situation at the estate,” Marcus murmured low enough so the board members couldn't hear. “An uninvited visitor tried to bypass the outer security gate on Fifth Avenue about twenty minutes ago.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened. A cold, lethal shadow passed over his features. “Who?”

“Not a hit squad,” Marcus whispered, his voice tense. “It was David Vance. Mrs. Carter’s brother.”

Daniel’s blood turned to ice.

David Vance had not set foot near the Carter estate since Claire’s funeral ten months ago. A smooth-talking, high-stakes corporate lawyer with a trail of bad debts and shady offshore accounts, David had spent years trying to tap into the Carter family trust. When Claire died, he had launched three separate legal challenges trying to gain guardianship of the twins, claiming Daniel was an unfit, grieving widower incapable of raising children.

All three lawsuits had been crushed by Daniel’s legal team within forty-eight hours, but David had never gone away quietly.

“Did he get past the perimeter?” Daniel asked quietly, his voice dropping an octave.

“No. The automated jammers and biometric sensors flagged him instantly. Security turned him around at the gate,” Marcus replied. “But before he left, he dropped a message with the gate guard for you. He said if you don't grant him meeting access by tomorrow morning, he’s filing a new emergency petition in Family Court regarding the girls' inheritance.”

Daniel slowly stood up from his chair, pushing his seat back with a sharp scrape against the floor. He buttoned his jacket, looking down at his startled board members with a cold, absolute finality.

“The meeting is adjourned,” Daniel announced, his voice slicing through the silent room. “Arthur, handle the Q3 reports. I have family matters to attend to.”

Without waiting for a response, Daniel turned and strode out of the boardroom, his mind racing with a dark, suffocating fury. He had protected his business empire from corporate sharks for over a decade, but if anyone—anyone—attempted to use his daughters as leverage to pick at the bones of Claire’s memory, he would burn their entire world to the ground.
