Chapter 9 - A Second ChanceSix months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the Whitaker estate. The terrace, which had once been the site of so much terror and cruel high-society fakery, was now decorated with bright white lilies, silk ribbons, and colorful balloons.

Classical music drifted through the air as fifty guests—true friends, loyal allies, and close family—sat in white chairs along the lawn.

At the front of the altar stood Marcus, wearing a sharp tux, acting as my best man. Beside him stood Dr. Keller and my closest trusted team members.

I stood waiting at the altar, my heart hammering against my ribs harder than it ever had during any mafia shootout.

The music shifted into a breathtaking acoustic melody.

The white double doors of the terrace opened.

First came Caleb, dressed in a tiny black suit, proudly walking down the runner while holding his brown stuffed rabbit, which now sported a little black bow tie to match his own.

Behind him came Sophie, wearing a beautiful white flower girl dress, holding a basket of pink rose petals, her face glowing with pure, unbridled joy.

And then came Grace.

My breath caught in my throat.

She was breathtaking. She wore a simple, elegant lace wedding gown that drifted around her feet like ocean spray. Her dark hair was styled in soft, cascading curls, and in her hands she held a bouquet of fresh white roses from the garden where we had first met.

She walked down the aisle, her dark eyes fixed entirely on me, holding a smile so radiant it illuminated the entire world.

When her father handed her hand to mine, I leaned in, whispering softly, "You take my breath away."

"You look pretty good yourself, Mr. Whitaker," she whispered back playfully, her eyes shining with tears of happiness.

The priest spoke beautiful words about resilience, loyalty, and the power of love to heal even the deepest wounds.

When it came time for the vows, I took both of Grace’s hands in mine.

"Grace," I said clearly, my voice echoing across the sunny lawn. "I promised my children I would protect them from the dark. But you showed us how to walk back into the light. You gave us a home, a mother, and a future. I give you my life, my honor, and my heart, forever."

Grace wiped a tear from her cheek, smiling up at me. "Evan, I promised myself I would always protect what is sacred. You and the children are my sacred heart. I choose you, today and every day, for the rest of my life."

"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the priest declared. "You may kiss the bride."

May you like

I pulled Grace gently against my chest, dipping her back slightly as I pressed a deep, passionate kiss to her lips.

The entire crowd erupted into wild applause and cheers. Sophie and Caleb ran up, jumping onto our legs, hugging us both tightly as we laughed together under the warm summer sun.
