Chapter 7 - The StormThe rain poured down in heavy sheets over the Rhode Island coastline.

Inside the black armored SUV parked two hundred yards from Richard Vale’s oceanfront estate, I adjusted the tactical vest over my dark shirt, checking the magazine on my suppressed sidearm.
Marcus checked his tactical watch. "Teams one and two are in position along the rear perimeter, boss. Chicago’s guards are sloppy. They don't know we're here."
I looked at my phone screen. The background display showed a photo Grace had taken two days ago—Sophie and Caleb sitting on the grass in the sunshine, laughing, with Grace holding them both tightly.
I am coming home to them, I promised myself.
"Move in," I ordered.
The operation was swift, silent, and brutal.
My tactical teams breached the estate perimeter like shadows in the night. The Chicago guards, relaxed and arrogant, were neutralized before they could even draw their weapons. Within seven minutes, the heavy security doors of the main mansion were breached.
I walked into the lavish, marble-floored living room.
Richard Vale sat on the leather sofa, tied to a chair, trembling violently as Marcus kept a weapon trained on his head. Sitting in the corner, clutching her designer coat, was Vanessa.
When Vanessa saw me step out of the shadows, dressed in full combat tactical gear, her eyes went wide with absolute terror.
"Evan!" Richard Vale stammered, sweat pouring down his face. "Listen to me! It was a business deal! Chicago offered us fifty million—"
"You put a target on my children," I said, my voice terrifyingly calm as I stepped closer to him. "You instructed Chicago to kidnap my family."
"No! That was Vanessa's idea!" Richard squealed, pointing at his daughter. "She was angry! She wanted revenge! I told her it was too dangerous!"
"You coward!" Vanessa shrieked, glaring at her father. "You were the one who hired the offshore lawyers!"
I held up a single hand, hushing them both instantly.
"I gave you a chance to walk away, Vanessa," I said, looking down at my ex-fiancée. "I let you leave my house alive out of respect for the time we spent together. But you mistook my mercy for weakness."
I turned to Marcus. "Hand the financial evidence over to the federal authorities tonight. Every senator, judge, and syndicate boss associated with the Vale family will be indicted by sunrise."
"And what about them, boss?" Marcus asked, gesturing toward Richard and Vanessa.
"They lose everything," I said coldly. "Their wealth, their reputation, their freedom. They will spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary."
I stepped close to Vanessa, leaning down until my eyes were inches from hers. "If you ever breathe my children's names again... a federal prison wall will not protect you."

I turned my back on their screaming and sobbing, walking out into the rain, heading straight back to Connecticut.
Back to where my life was waiting.
