Chapter 6 - Shadows on the HorizonThree weeks passed. Three weeks that felt like a quiet paradise.

Grace transformed the estate. She unlocked the heavy shuttered windows, brought flowers from the garden into every room, and spent her afternoons teaching Sophie how to paint and helping Caleb practice his reading.
The children stopped flinching when doors closed. Caleb stopped hiding his stuffed rabbit. Sophie’s bright, beautiful laugh echoed through the grand hallways once again.
And every evening, after the kids were in bed, Grace and I sat on the terrace drinking tea, talking for hours. I told her about my late wife, about my struggles to balance my ruthless business with being a single father. She told her story—about her medical career, her love for nursing, and how hard it had been when her family fell apart.
I found myself falling for her—deeply, completely, and helplessly. She wasn't just the woman who had saved my kids; she was the woman who had restored my soul.
But in my world, peace never lasts without a fight.
It was a rainy Thursday night. The kids were fast asleep upstairs, and Grace was reading in the library.
Marcus burst into my private study, his coat soaked with rain, his face darker than I had seen it in years.
"Boss," Marcus said grimly. "We have a breach."
I stood up instantly. "What happened?"
"Richard Vale just sold his entire corporate network to the Chicago Outfit," Marcus revealed. "He knew we were closing in on his financial fraud. In exchange for immunity and protection, Vale gave the Chicago bosses access to our transport routes along the Connecticut border."
My jaw hardened. The Chicago Outfit had been trying to get a foothold in New England for a decade. With Vale's internal security clearance, they had the keys to my kingdom.
"Where is Vale now?" I demanded.
"He's hiding in a fortified mansion in Rhode Island, guarded by twenty Chicago heavy hitters," Marcus said. "And boss... it gets worse."
Marcus slid an intercepted audio recording device onto my desk and hit play.
Vanessa’s sharp, spiteful voice echoed through the speaker: "...the housekeeper is his weak spot now. Evan looks at her like she’s made of glass. If you take the girl and the kids while Evan is handling the border routes, he’ll surrender his entire territory without firing a single shot."
A cold, lethal fury ignited in my chest—a dark flame so intense it felt like oxygen was leaving the room.
Vanessa and her father hadn't just tried to steal my wealth; now they were targeting the woman and children I loved.
"Marcus," I growled, my voice dropping into a deadly whisper.

"Sir?"
"Assemble the entire tactical team," I ordered, stepping out from behind my desk. "We aren't waiting for them to strike. Tonight, we erase the Vale family permanently."
