Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

Three weeks after the raid on the Moretti estate, a quiet normalcy settled over Brooklyn Heights, though it was a normalcy built on absolute power.
With the Marcone family wiped out, Rico Moretti was officially crowned the undisputed Don of the New York Syndicate Commission. The other four crime families bowed to his authority, terrified by the ruthless efficiency with which he had annihilated his enemies overnight.
Yet inside the estate, Rico was a different man.
His shoulder was healing under Clara’s meticulous care. Every morning, Clara would sit beside him on the terrace, applying medical ointment to his jagged scars, while Leo played happily with his puppy in the garden below.
The coldness that had defined the house for six months was gone. Laughter filled the hallways, fresh Italian pastries were delivered daily, and the guards no longer walked with terrified postures.
However, dark clouds were gathering on a different horizon.
One rainy afternoon while Leo was taking his nap, Clara sat in the library, reading a book. The heavy oak doors opened, and Dante stepped in, his face solemn.
"Miss Vance," Dante said quietly. "The Don wants to see you in his private office."
Clara set her book down, sensing a change in the air. "Is everything okay, Dante?"
"He has a visitor," Dante replied cryptically. "Someone from your past."
Clara’s heart did a strange, anxious flip. She stood up, smoothing her dress, and walked down the long corridor toward Rico’s office.
When she pushed the doors open, she froze on the spot.
Sitting in a leather chair across from Rico’s desk was a man she hadn't seen in three years—a sleazy, sharp-suited loan shark named Julian Vance. He was her late mother's stepbrother, a gambling addict who had run up massive debts with mobsters in Upstate New York before disappearing when Clara’s mother got sick.
Rico sat behind his desk, holding a glass of scotch, his expression cold as winter ice. Standing behind Julian were two imposing enforcers with their hands folded.
"Clara!" Julian gasped, jumping up from his chair with a fake, greasy smile. "My little niece! Look at you, living like royalty in Brooklyn!"
"Julian?" Clara said, her voice dripping with disgust. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to protect you, sweetheart!" Julian claimed, stepping toward her, though Dante instantly stepped into his path, blocking him. "I heard you were being held here by the Moretti family! I went to the police, I went to the papers—"
"Julian came to my estate two hours ago," Rico interrupted, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly smooth tone. "He tried to blackmail me, Clara."
Clara blinked, looking at her uncle. "Blackmail you?"
"He claimed that you are an unstable, unfit caregiver who stole sixty thousand dollars from your mother's estate before fleeing to Brooklyn," Rico explained, swirling the scotch in his glass. "He offered to sell me 'incriminating evidence' about your past for two hundred thousand dollars, or else he would go to the child welfare authorities and claim Leo is in danger."
Clara’s face turned bright red with rage. "You lying parasite! You stole my mother's life insurance check while she was dying in the hospice! You left us with forty thousand dollars in medical bills!"
Julian backed away, sweating profusely. "Clara, be reasonable! We're family! You're living in a mobster's house, sleeping with the Butcher of Brooklyn! I can help you get out of here—"
SLAM!
Rico slammed his crystal glass onto the mahogany desk. The sound echoed like a gunshot.
Rico stood up slowly, walking around his desk. The sheer aura of death radiating from him made Julian drop to his knees, trembling like a leaf.
"You made three mistakes today, Julian," Rico said, leaning down until his ice-blue eyes were inches from the terrified man's face. "First, you came into my house. Second, you threatened my family. And third... you spoke to Clara as if she were alone in this world."
"Please! Mr. Moretti! I was just trying to make a deal!" Julian squealed, clutching his hands together.
Rico didn't answer him. He looked up at Clara.
"Clara," Rico said softly, his voice devoid of anger, presenting her with absolute choice. "He is your blood. What do you want me to do with him?"
Clara looked at her uncle—the man who had abandoned her mother, who had tried to ruin her life, who had come here to extortionately exploit her trauma. Then she looked at Rico, knowing that a single nod from her would mean Julian would be fed to the fishes in the Atlantic Ocean by sunset.
She took a deep breath. She wasn't a killer. She wasn't part of Rico's violent syndicate. But she was no longer a helpless victim either.
"Give him ten thousand dollars," Clara said clearly.
Julian’s eyes lit up with greedy shock. "Clara! Bless you—"
"And then," Clara continued, her eyes cold as steel, "have Dante take him to the airport, put him on a one-way flight to Alaska, and tell him that if he ever sets foot in New York again, he will vanish."
Rico smiled—a genuine, proud, dark smile.
"You heard the lady," Rico commanded Dante. "Take him away."
As Julian was dragged screaming out of the office, Rico walked up to Clara, pulling her into his arms, resting his chin on the top of her head.

"You're getting mean, Miss Vance," Rico murmured affectionately against her hair.
"I learned from the best, Mr. Moretti," Clara whispered back, wrapping her arms around his waist.
