Chapter 1 - The Touch of Grace

Rico Moretti’s cold, ice-blue eyes locked onto Clara with lethal intensity. The air around the king’s table at Il Destino felt heavy enough to choke on. Dante was still nursing his bleeding hand, his knuckles white, while Marco stood frozen near the wine rack, praying to every saint he knew that the blood spilled tonight wouldn't stain the white tablecloths.
"Who are you?" Rico repeated, his voice dropping into a register that usually made grown men beg for their lives. "Did I call for a waitress?"
Clara didn't answer him immediately. She didn't bow her head, nor did she flinch from the heavy gaze of the capo of Brooklyn. Instead, she slowly sank to her knees right on the cold, hard marble floor, bringing herself down to the exact eye level of the three-year-old boy who was hyperventilating on the leather booth seat.
"Hey, little guy," Clara whispered softly. Her voice wasn't elevated; it was a gentle, melodic hum that sliced clean through the chaotic tension of the dining room.
Leo stopped mid-scream. His small chest heaved violently beneath his designer velvet sweater, tears streaming down his flushed, reddened cheeks. He held his little fists balled tightly, ready to strike out at anyone who dared step close.
"I know," Clara murmured, placing the glass of warm milk on the edge of the low table. "It's too loud in here, isn't it? The lights are too bright. The big people are all staring. And your chest feels like it's squeezing you inside out."
Leo blinked. His mouth remained slightly open, a tiny bubble of saliva bursting on his lower lip. He stared at Clara’s tired hazel eyes.
"My mama used to give me this when my chest hurt," Clara continued, her tone steady, devoid of any fear. She pushed the glass half an inch closer. "A little warm milk with a single drop of sugar. Just enough to wash away the sour taste."
Rico watched from above, his hand still resting beneath his tailored Brioni lapel. He was accustomed to people cowering, screaming, or bribing their way into his presence. Nobody spoke to his son like this. Nobody looked past the wall of armed guards and recognized the raw, unadulterated terror of a grieving child.
Slowly, hesitatingly, Leo uncurled his tiny fist. He reached out his small hand, his little fingers trembling as he took the glass from Clara. He brought it to his lips and took a slow, desperate gulp. Warm milk trickled down his chin, but his ragged breathing began to slow.
The entire restaurant held its collective breath. Marco exhaled a shaky breath against the wall; Dante stared in disbelief.
Then came the moment that made Rico Moretti’s heart stop completely.
Leo lowered the glass. With his small, milky left hand, he didn't reach for his father, nor did he grab his stuffed animal. Instead, he reached out and gently laid his tiny palm flat against the side of Clara’s neck, right over her pulse point.
His tiny thumb stroked her jawline twice—a slow, rhythmic, comforting motion.
It was the exact gesture his mother, Elena, used to do every single night before she put him to sleep. It was a private, sacred affection that Leo had not shown to a single human being since the afternoon Elena was murdered in front of him. He had refused to let his aunts touch him, had bitten his father’s wrists when held, and had shattered every picture frame bearing his mother's face.
Yet here he was, resting his small, sticky hand against the pulse of a nameless, twenty-four-year-old waitress.
Rico’s frozen demeanor fractured. His jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched violently along his cheekbone. "Leo..." Rico gasped, his gravelly voice barely audible over the hum of the air purifiers.
Leo didn't look at his father. He leaned forward, resting his forehead lightly against Clara’s shoulder, his little eyes fluttering shut as the warm milk and the calm rhythm of Clara’s breathing worked their magic. Within thirty seconds, the child who had terrorized Brooklyn’s finest establishment for two hours fell completely, blissfully asleep in the arms of a complete stranger.
Clara gently wrapped her arms around the boy, supporting his weight so he wouldn't slip off the bench. She looked up, her gaze finally meeting Rico's terrifying blue eyes.
"He wasn't throwing a tantrum, Mr. Moretti," Clara said softly, her voice firm despite the sweat bead forming at her temple. "He was having a panic attack. He’s grieving, and he’s overwhelmed."
Rico stared at her, his mind racing through a thousand variables. The silence in the restaurant was absolute.
"What is your name?" Rico asked, his tone quiet, stripped of its previous fury, but carrying an authority that demanded absolute honesty.
"Clara," she replied. "Clara Vance."
Rico stood up. His towering six-foot-three frame cast a long, imposing shadow over the table. He reached down, expecting to lift Leo into his own arms, but the moment his sleeve brushed the child, Leo whimpered in his sleep, his tiny fingers tightening around the fabric of Clara’s apron.
Rico stopped his hands in mid-air. His eyes flicked from his son's face back to Clara.
"Dante," Rico commanded, his cold voice cutting through the room.
"Yes, Boss?" the giant security chief stepped forward instantly.
"Bring the car to the private rear exit," Rico ordered. He looked down at Clara, his icy gaze lingering on her tired face and her frayed apron. "Miss Vance, you are coming with us."
Clara froze. "Excuse me? Mr. Moretti, my shift ends at midnight, and I have to—"
"I am not asking, Miss Vance," Rico cut her off, pulling a stack of hundred-dollar bills from his clip and tossing them casually onto the table next to the shattered risotto plate. "My son is holding onto you. If you pull away and wake him up, we start this nightmare all over again. You will accompany us to the estate, put him to bed, and then we will discuss your future."
May you like
"My future?" Clara repeated, her brow furrowing. "I already have a job."
Rico looked at Marco, the sweating manager, then back at Clara. "Not anymore. As of five seconds ago, you are the exclusive personal caregiver to Leo Moretti. Name your price, or I drag you into that car myself."
