Chapter 6 - A Debt Paid in Full

Six months later.

The summer sun shone brilliantly over the blue waters of Lake Michigan, illuminating the manicured lawn of a sprawling private estate in Lake Forest—far away from the concrete and blood of the South Side.

On the wrap-around wooden porch, Julian was sitting at a glass table, studying for his upcoming medical school entrance exams, looking healthy, happy, and completely restored.

Inside the sunlit kitchen, the air was filled with the rich aroma of fresh espresso and warm Italian pastries.

I stood near the marble island wearing a comfortable linen dress, my hair tied up in a loose knot, reviewing patient files on a tablet. Through the foundation set up by Adrian, I now managed three private community clinics across Chicago, providing free, high-end emergency medical care to underprivileged families and victims of violent crime.

A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind.

I leaned my head back against Adrian’s broad chest, letting out a soft, contented sigh as his lips pressed gently against the side of my neck.

He was wearing a simple white linen shirt, his dark hair slightly damp from his morning swim in the lake. The dangerous, dark aura he had carried in that underground cell was gone, replaced by the deep, unshakeable peace of a man who had built a safe world for the people he loved.

"You're working too hard, Nurse Carter," Adrian murmured against my skin, his hands gently resting over my hips.

"Someone has to review these equipment grants, Boss Moretti," I teased, turning in his arms, wrapping my hands around his neck, looking up into his clear gray eyes.

Adrian smiled—a genuine, radiant smile that still made my heart skip a beat every time I saw it.

"The syndicate is completely restructured, Maeve," Adrian said softly, his thumbs tracing my cheekbones. "The illegal routes are closed. The docks are clean. Dominic's mess is erased. The Moretti name stands for legitimate business now."

"I know," I whispered, resting my hand over his chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart beneath my palm—the same heart I had saved in the dark six months ago. "You kept every promise you made me."

"I have one more promise to make," Adrian said.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He opened it to reveal a magnificent oval-cut diamond ring, glistening like sunlight on water.

My breath hitched in my throat. Tears flooded my eyes.

"Maeve Carter," Adrian said, his deep voice filled with profound, unwavering devotion as he looked into my eyes. "You walked into my dark world when everyone else ran away. You healed my body, but you saved my soul. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"

I looked at the incredible man standing before me—no longer a feared crime lord, but my protector, my partner, my love.

"Yes, Adrian," I wept happily, a brilliant smile breaking across my face. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"

Adrian slid the ring onto my finger, pulled me into his arms, and lifted me up into a passionate, joyous kiss that echoed across the quiet, sunlit estate.

Through the kitchen window, Julian looked up from his textbooks, saw us embracing in the sunshine, and offered a warm, happy smile before returning to his work.

I looked out at the vast blue ocean stretching beyond the lawn, knowing that the forged papers, the heavy iron chains, and the dark blood on my hands were all part of the path that led me to my home—and into the arms of the man I would love for the rest of my life.
