Chapter 5 - The Lakefront Reckoning

At 8:45 PM, a torrential rainstorm battered the glass walls of Dominic Moretti’s lakefront estate in Geneva.

Inside the grand ballroom, thirty high-ranking syndicate lieutenants, corrupt city officials, and underworld bosses were gathered around a massive oak dining table, drinking vintage champagne.

At the head of the table stood Dominic Moretti—a thirty-two-year-old man with slicked-back hair, wearing a five-thousand-dollar suit, holding a crystal glass high in the air.

"To a new era!" Dominic declared loudly, his voice echoing through the opulent room. "To the future of the Moretti organization! My brother Adrian was a visionary, but he grew soft. He let old rules slow us down. Tonight, we take full control of the Midwest!"

The syndicate bosses raised their glasses, cheering loudly.

BOOM!

A thunderous explosion shattered the floor-to-ceiling glass doors at the rear of the ballroom!

Blinding smoke and rain poured into the room as the crystal chandelier above crashed down onto the oak table, plunging the room into chaotic darkness!

"WHAT THE HELL?!" Dominic screamed, dropping his glass, pulling a nickel-plated pistol from his holster. "GUARDS!"

Before his security detail could raise their weapons, red laser sights cut through the black smoke.

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

Silenced rifle fire echoed through the ballroom with terrifying efficiency. Dominic’s personal guards dropped one by one, blood splattering across the white marble floor as panic erupted among the syndicate bosses!

Through the swirling smoke and rain, a single tall figure stepped into the room.

He wore a long black tactical coat, holding a heavy semi-automatic shotgun in his right hand. The flickering light from the burning curtains illuminated his face—sharp, cold, unyielding.

Adrian Moretti.

The ballroom went dead silent.

Men who had spent thirty years in organized crime gasped in utter horror, stumbling backward, knocking over chairs as if they were looking at a ghost returned from the grave.

"A... Adrian?!" Dominic shrieked, his face draining of every drop of color, his knees trembling so violently he nearly fell. "You... you were killed on I-90!"

"You always were a terrible planner, Dominic," Adrian said, his deep voice carrying over the sound of the rain and wind. He racked the heavy shotgun with a metallic CLICK-CLACK that sounded like a death sentence. "You sent six men to do a job that required an army."

"Shoot him!" Dominic screamed frantically to his remaining lieutenants. "I'll give five million dollars to whoever puts a bullet in his head!"

Nobody moved.

Every syndicate boss in the room lowered their weapons, stepping back against the walls, raising their hands in complete surrender. They knew Adrian Moretti. They knew that to raise a weapon against him now meant absolute, immediate execution.

Meanwhile, in the subterranean wine cellar beneath the estate, I was moving through the dark corridor alongside Marcus and two tactical operators.

"Clear!" Marcus whispered, kicking open the heavy oak door of the cell.

Inside, Julian was huddled in the corner, bleeding from a cut on his lip, his eyes wide with terror as we burst in.

"Julian!" I cried out, dropping my medical kit, rushing across the room to kneel beside him.

"Maeve?!" Julian gasped in utter shock, blinking through the dark. "What... how are you here?! Who are these people?!"

"I'm here to take you home," I wept, using my shears to cut through the heavy zip-ties around his wrists. "Are you hurt? Can you walk?"

"I... I think my ankle is sprained, but I'm okay!" Julian stammered, pulling me into a tight, trembling hug. "Maeve, there's a monster upstairs... Adrian Moretti..."

"The monster upstairs is saving your life, kid," Marcus said dryly, helping Julian to his feet. "Now move. The Boss is finishing up."

We hurried up the service stairs, emerging into the ruined grand ballroom.

The room was cleared. The corrupt syndicate bosses were lined up against the wall under the heavy guard of Marcus’s men.

In the center of the room, Dominic Moretti was on his knees, blood trickling from his nose, his hands bound behind his back.

Standing over him was Adrian.

When Adrian saw me step into the room holding Julian’s hand, his harsh, terrifying expression softened slightly. He looked at Julian, verifying he was unharmed, then looked back down at his traitorous brother.

"Maeve," Adrian called out softly. "Take your brother to the SUV outside. It's over."

Julian stared at Adrian in utter awe and terror, pulling my arm. "Maeve, let's go! Please!"

I looked at Adrian. He stood tall amid the ruined ballroom, a king who had reclaimed his throne, a man who had burned through hell to keep a promise made to an unknown nurse in a dark basement cell.

"I'll be waiting in the car, Adrian," I said quietly.

Adrian nodded once. "I'll be out in two minutes."

As I led Julian through the shattered glass doors into the cold rain, a single, final gunshot echoed behind us, ending the war for Chicago once and for all.
