Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Barrington

The safehouse in Barrington was a sprawling, secluded estate nestled deep within a pine forest, surrounded by high brick walls and automated security turrets. It was Adrian’s personal retreat—a place unknown even to his internal syndicate council.
For twenty-four hours, the estate was locked down.
While Marcus assembled a team of thirty elite operators loyal only to Adrian, I turned the master bedroom into a private intensive care unit. Using the advanced medical supplies stored in the estate's subterranean armory, I spent six hours re-stitching Adrian’s muscle layers, administering blood transfusions, and pushing heavy antibiotics through his IV.
By the next afternoon, the fever had finally broken completely.
I sat in an armchair beside the massive stone fireplace in the bedroom, staring into the flickering flames, holding a cup of hot tea. I was wearing an oversized black sweater belonging to Adrian, my hair damp from a long shower, my mind consumed by thoughts of my brother.
Was Julian still breathing? Was he being tortured in some basement while I sat in this luxurious mansion?
"He's alive, Maeve."
I turned my head.
Adrian was standing near the edge of the bed. He was shirtless, wearing dark trousers, a fresh white bandage wrapped neatly across his chest and waist. He looked restored—the color returned to his face, his dark gray eyes sharp, commanding, and dangerous once more.
"How do you know?" I asked, standing up from the armchair.
Adrian walked over to the desk, picking up a satellite tablet. He tapped the screen and held it out to me.
On the screen was a live, high-resolution thermal camera feed showing the interior of a brick wine cellar beneath a sprawling mansion. Huddled in the corner, tied to a wooden chair, was a young man with messy brown hair.
Julian.
"Oh, God," I sobbed, pressing my hand against my mouth as tears flooded my eyes. "That's him... that's Julian!"
"Dominic is keeping him alive as a bargaining chip," Adrian explained, stepping closer to me, his presence warm and solid beside me. "Dominic believes he holds the upper hand. He has called an emergency meeting of the syndicate heads tonight at nine o'clock at his lakefront estate to officially declare himself the new head of the Moretti family, using my 'death' as his stepping stone."
"What are you going to do?" I asked, looking up into his dark eyes.
Adrian’s mouth curled into a cold, lethal smile that sent a shiver down my spine.
"I am going to attend my brother's celebration," Adrian whispered softly. "And I am going to show the underworld what happens to traitors."
He reached out, taking my cold hands in his broad, warm palms.
"Marcus will take you to a secure safehouse in Wisconsin before we move," Adrian said. "You'll be safe there until—"
"No," I cut in firmly, pulling my hands from his, staring at him with absolute defiance. "I'm coming with you."
Adrian frowned, his eyebrows pulling together in immediate disapproval. "Maeve, this is an armed assault on a fortified compound. It is a bloodbath. You are a nurse, not a soldier."
"I am the only person who can identify Julian immediately in the dark," I countered, stepping into his space, refusing to back down. "And if Julian is wounded when your men break in, he will need immediate trauma care before he can be moved. You need me there, Adrian."
Adrian stared at me, his jaw clenching as he struggled between his protective instinct toward me and the undeniable truth of my words.
He stepped closer, his shadow completely enveloping me. He reached up, his long fingers gently cupping the back of my neck, pulling my face up until our breath mingled in the quiet room.
"If anything happens to you, Maeve," Adrian murmured, his voice dropping into a rough, fierce whisper, "I will burn this entire city to the ground."
May you like
"Nothing is going to happen to me," I whispered back, my pulse racing as my eyes dropped to his lips. "Because the most dangerous man in Chicago is protecting me."
Adrian’s gray eyes flared with intense, raw passion. He leaned down and pressed his lips firmly against mine—a deep, fierce, possessive kiss that consumed my senses, marking me as his once and for all.
