Chapter 8 - Truth in the Dark

The hospital room was quiet, lit only by the rhythmic flashing of the heart monitor. Grace was sleeping peacefully in the bed. Evelyn sat in a chair beside her, her fingers gently stroking her daughter's hand. Julian stood by the window, looking out at the Chicago skyline as dawn began to break.

Why didn't you look at the ultrasound, Julian? Evelyn asked, her voice quiet in the dark room.

Julian closed his eyes, the question hitting him like a physical blow. He turned to face her, stepping fully into the dim light. Because I was terrified. I grew up with a father who cheated, who lied, who bought his way out of every emotional connection. I always felt like a fraud, Evelyn. When I saw those messages... my worst fear took over. My fear that I was not enough for you. That you had realized I was broken, and you had found someone better.

He walked slowly toward her, falling to his knees beside her chair.

I let my trauma destroy the best thing that ever happened to me, he whispered, looking up into her tired eyes. I punished you for my own brokenness. Every day for the last five years, I have hated myself for letting you go. And now, seeing you with them... seeing what a phenomenal mother you are... I know I do not deserve your forgiveness. But I am so incredibly sorry, Evelyn. For all of it.

Evelyn looked down at the man who commanded boardrooms and terrified billionaires, now kneeling on a linoleum hospital floor, weeping for his family. She reached out, letting her fingers gently trace the line of his jaw.

I never wanted anyone else, Julian, she whispered. It was always you.
