Chapter 1 - The Weight of Five Years

The silence stretching between them felt heavier than the roar of the jet engines overhead. Julian Vance stood frozen on the curbside of O'Hare International Airport, staring at the three little girls clinging to Evelyn. The wind whipped through his perfectly tailored suit, but he seemed entirely numb to the cold. His sharp gray-green eyes darted from Sophie to Grace, and finally to Emma, mapping every feature that mirrored his own. Five. She had said the word with a quiet, devastating finality. Five years ago, he had thrown her out of his penthouse, accusing her of infidelity. Now, the absolute truth was staring back at him in the form of three beautiful, dark-haired children.

Evelyn did not wait for him to recover from the shock. She turned smoothly, herding the girls toward the waiting Bentley. The driver, a trusted friend named David, already had the doors open. She helped Emma into her booster seat, followed by Grace and Sophie. Just as Evelyn reached for the heavy door to pull it shut, a large, trembling hand clamped onto the metal frame. Julian had crossed the distance between them in three long strides. His knuckles were white, his breathing shallow and erratic.

Let go of the door, Julian, Evelyn said, her voice steady but laced with a dangerous calm. The girls are watching.

He leaned in close, his voice a ragged whisper that sounded nothing like the confident billionaire who had boarded the plane in New York. You cannot just walk away. Not from this. Not from them. Are they... Evelyn, are they mine?

You answered that question yourself five years ago, she replied coldly. You told me not to expect you to raise another man's child. I took your advice. I raised them myself.

She yanked the door inward, forcing him to step back or lose his fingers. The heavy door slammed shut with a solid thud, severing his view of the girls. Evelyn slid into the front passenger seat, instructing David to drive. As the Bentley pulled away into the Chicago traffic, Evelyn looked into the side mirror. Julian was still standing on the curb, oblivious to the security guards asking him to move along. His empire, his billions, and his arrogant pride meant absolutely nothing in that moment. His world had just been shattered, and Evelyn felt a complicated mix of vindication and profound sorrow.
