Chapter 7 - The Boardroom

The high-rise headquarters of Vale International towered seventy stories above the city skyline, its glass facade gleaming brightly in the afternoon sun.

On the top floor, inside the soundproofed, mahogany-lined executive boardroom, the twenty members of the Board of Directors were gathered around a massive oval table.

At the head of the table sat Julian Vale.

He had changed into an immaculate dark navy suit, his hair perfectly combed, his hands resting casually over a velvet-lined briefcase sitting on the table before him.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian’s smooth, commanding voice echoed through the room. "Thank you for attending this emergency meeting on such short notice."

The board members whispered among themselves, looking nervous. The sudden disappearance of Eleanor Vale over the last twenty-four hours had sent rumors flying through the financial markets.

"As you are aware," Julian continued, standing up and buttoning his jacket, "my mother's health has been declining rapidly over the past few months. Last night, she suffered a severe cognitive episode at a private dinner downtown."

He feigned a look of deep, sorrowful regret, lowering his head slightly.

"It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that Eleanor Vale has officially retired from her position as Chairman of the Board, effective immediately. Under the terms of the founder's trust, her voting shares have been temporarily transferred to my office as Vice Chairman."

A murmur of shock swept through the room.

"Do you have the signed transfer documents, Julian?" asked Marcus Vance, the oldest independent director on the board, leaning forward with his eyebrows raised in suspicion. "Eleanor spoke to me two days ago and was entirely lucid."

"The documents were executed this morning at our private medical facility," Julian lied smoothly, reaching down to unlatch the velvet briefcase. "Along with full power of attorney. I have the files right here—"

BANG!

The double mahogany doors at the back of the boardroom exploded open, slamming violently against the walls.

Every board member jumped in their seats.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the bright sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows, was Maya Reed.

She was dressed in a sleek, dark tailored suit that Eleanor had provided, her hair tied back in a sharp, elegant ponytail. Around her neck, shining brightly against her dark lapel, was the silver teardrop necklace.

Flanking her on the left was Adrian Vale, holding a thick leather dossier under his arm.

And flanking her on the right, walking with a wooden cane but holding her head high with terrifying, regal authority, was Eleanor Vale.

The boardroom went deathly silent.

Julian froze, his hands hovering inches above his open briefcase, his face draining of every drop of color.

"M-Mother?" Julian stammered, his voice dropping an octave, his suave persona shattering into jagged, panicked pieces. "You... you were..."

"I was supposed to be dead in a basement fire, Julian?" Eleanor’s voice boomed across the boardroom, cold and sharp as a guillotine blade. "Is that what you were about to tell the board?"

Marcus Vance stood up immediately, his eyes wide. "Eleanor! What is the meaning of this? Julian just claimed you were incapacitated!"

"Julian is a liar, a thief, and a murderer," Eleanor declared, walking slowly into the room, her cane striking the marble floor with rhythmic, ominous authority. "And today, he is being removed from Vale International."

Julian’s eyes darted frantically toward the boardroom doors, looking for his security guards, but two federal agents dressed in dark suits stepped into the hallway behind Adrian, blocking the exit.

"This is ridiculous!" Julian shouted, slamming his hand onto the table, trying desperately to regain control of the room. "This woman is an intruder! She's a waitress my mother picked up off the street to orchestrate a senile coup! Security, clear this room!"

"The security team on this floor has been detained by the FBI, Uncle Julian," Adrian said smoothly, stepping forward and laying the military-grade solid-state drive onto the center of the boardroom table.

"What is that?" Marcus Vance asked, looking at the drive.

"That," Maya spoke up, her voice ringing clear, strong, and completely unwavering across the room, "is twenty years of evidence documented by Clara Vale. The woman you claimed drowned off the coast of Maine."

Julian stared at Maya, his breath coming in shallow, frantic gasps. "She's dead! Clara is dead!"

"Clara died ten years ago from injuries your men caused her," Maya said, stepping directly up to the head of the table, looking Julian straight in his panicked eyes. "My name is Maya Vale. I am Clara’s daughter. And I am here to take back what you stole from my mother."
