Chapter 5 - The Locked Box

"Step away from the desk, Adrian," Julian ordered, his voice echoing off the cold granite walls of the subterranean chamber. "Put the gun on the floor. Very slowly."
Adrian’s jaw tightened, his knuckles turning white around the grip of his weapon. "How did you know about the vault, Julian? Only grandfather and grandmother had the blueprints."
"Your grandfather was a creature of habit," Julian sneered, gesturing with his pistol for his men to move into the chamber. Two of the armed operatives immediately stepped forward, disarming Adrian and forcing him against the stone wall. "He kept a duplicate set of blueprints in his private safe in Paris. I found them ten years ago. The only thing I lacked were the keys."
Julian walked slowly into the center of the vault, his dark eyes sweeping over the iron door, the chained metal box, and finally settling on Maya, who stood backed against the wooden desk, clutching her mother's letter to her chest.
"Hand me the envelope, girl," Julian commanded, holding out his gloved hand.
"No," Maya said, her voice shaking, but her eyes burning with defiance. "This belongs to me. My mother left it for me."
"Your mother was a traitor to this family!" Julian spat, his suave demeanor instantly evaporating into a flash of raw, ugly fury. "She was going to hand over twenty years of off-shore accounts, political bribery records, and shell company filings to the Federal Prosecutor! She was going to destroy everything Arthur built!"
"She was going to stop a crime syndicate!" Eleanor shouted, stepping between Julian and Maya, her hands trembling with rage. "You and Arthur were laundering blood money through Vale International! Clara found out about the human trafficking routes in South America that your subsidiary was funding!"
"It was business!" Julian roared, his voice bouncing deafeningly inside the enclosed space. "It was three hundred million dollars a year in net profit! Clara was a naive idealist who thought she could destroy our family's fortune because of her pathetic moral code!"
"So you killed her," Maya whispered, tears spilling over her lashes as the horrific truth finally solidified in her mind. "You cut her brakes. You chased her into the sea."
Julian adjusted his coat, his expression settling back into a chilling, sociopathic calm. "I gave her a choice. Hand over the ledger and accept an exile in Europe, or suffer an accident. She chose to run. Sarah Reed was stupid enough to help her stage the crash, but Clara didn't survive three years in hiding before her body finally gave out from the injuries she suffered that night."
He stepped closer to Maya, pointing his gun at her forehead.
"You look just like her," Julian whispered softly. "It's almost poetic. Two generations of self-righteous fools trying to ruin the Vale name."
"Julian, stop!" Eleanor cried out, grabbing his arm. "She's your niece! She's Clara's blood!"
Julian shoved the old woman hard to the side. Eleanor stumbled, striking her hip against the iron door frame with a sharp cry of pain, collapsing onto the damp floor.
"Grandmother!" Adrian yelled, wrestling against the two operatives holding him. He slammed his elbow back into the face of the operative on his right, breaking the man's nose, but the second operative drove the butt of his rifle into Adrian’s ribs, dropping him to his knees.
Julian ignored them, reaching out with his left hand and snatching the envelope from Maya’s grasp.
He tore the paper open, pulling out a small yellowed key and a handwritten note.
He looked at the small gold key, then at the padlock securing the metal box on the desk.
"Finally," Julian breathed, his eyes gleaming with unholy triumph. "The lost ledger."
He stepped up to the chained box, inserting the small key into the padlock.
CLICK.
The heavy lock fell open. Julian pulled the heavy steel chains off the metal box and lifted the lid.
Inside lay a thick, leather-bound book stamped with the Vale family seal, alongside three digital storage drives sealed in static-proof bags.
Julian picked up one of the digital drives, holding it up to the beam of the overhead lights. "Twenty years of searching... buried right under our feet."
He turned back toward his operatives, his face hardening into an absolute, lethal finality.
"Kill them all," Julian ordered flatly. "Make it look like a tragic gas leak beneath the manor. The estate has been unstable for years anyway."
"Julian, no!" Eleanor wept from the floor.
Julian turned his back on them, walking toward the spiral stairs with the box under his arm.
"Goodbye, Mother," Julian said softly. "You should have stayed in your wing."
As the lead operative raised his suppressed machine gun toward Adrian’s head, Maya’s hand slipped into her coat pocket, her fingers closing around the cold, heavy brass paperweight she had grabbed off the library desk above before coming down.
May you like
She didn't hesitate.
Maya lunged forward with all the strength in her body, slamming the heavy brass weight directly into the side of the lead operative's head.
