Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Guest

I ran down the grand staircase,
the marble steps cold under my feet.
The foyer was a scene of chaos.
Two security guards were struggling to hold back Miguel,
who was flailing his arms,
his tie undone,
his face flushed a deep,
ugly red.
Ethan was standing a few feet away,
looking disgusted.
Chloe was behind him,
her arms crossed,
a look of pure amusement on her face.
“Maya!”
Miguel roared when he saw me.
“Tell these apes who I am!
Tell them I’m your husband!”
“Ex-husband,
Miguel,”
I said,
my voice echoing in the vast space.
“And you need to leave.
Now.”
I walked toward him,
feeling the eyes of the Vance family on me.
This was exactly what Ofelia wanted.
She wanted me to be humiliated.
She wanted to prove that I could never escape the mess of my life.
“I’m not leaving!”
Miguel shouted,
spitting as he spoke.
“I saw you on the terrace!
I saw you with that man!
Is that why you left?
To find a billionaire to crawl to?”
Ethan stepped forward,
his eyes fixed on me.
“Maya,
is this man bothering you?”
“He’s leaving,
Mr. Vance,”
I said,
trying to stay calm.
“He’s just had too much to drink.”
“I haven't had enough!”
Miguel lunged toward me,
breaking free from one of the guards.
He grabbed my shoulder,
his fingers digging into my skin.
“You think you’re better than me?
Working in this house?
You’re a servant,
Maya!
Just like you were at home!
My mother was right—you’re nothing without us!”
I looked at Miguel,
and for the first time,
I didn't feel fear.
I didn't feel the urge to apologize or to make things right.
I felt pity.
He was a small,
weak man who needed to tear others down to feel tall.
I reached up and slowly,
deliberately,
unpeeled his hand from my shoulder.
“Your mother was wrong,”
I said,
my voice loud enough for everyone to hear.
“I was never nothing.
I was the one holding your life together.
I was the one who made sure you had a home to come back to.
And now that I’m gone,
you’re falling apart.
Look at yourself,
Miguel.
You’re a joke.”
The silence that followed was absolute.
Miguel stared at me,
his mouth agape.
He hadn't expected me to fight back.
He hadn't expected the "quiet Maya" to have a backbone.
Ethan signaled to the guards.
“Get him out of here.
If he shows up again,
call the police.”
The guards dragged Miguel toward the door.
He was still shouting,
his voice fading as they took him down the driveway,
but the damage was done.
I stood in the center of the foyer,
my breath coming in short,
sharp bursts.
“Quite a performance,”
Chloe said,
stepping forward.
“I didn't know our little nurse had such a colorful past.”
“We all have pasts,
Chloe,”
I said,
meeting her gaze.
“Some of us just hide them better than others.”
Ethan looked at me,
his expression unreadable.
“Go back to Richard,
Maya.
And make sure this doesn't happen again.
We have a big day tomorrow.”
I nodded and turned away,
walking back up the stairs.
My heart was still racing,
but my mind was clear.
Miguel’s arrival had been a distraction,
but it had also given me a gift.
It had reminded me of what I was fighting for.
I wasn't just fighting for Richard.
May you like
I was fighting for the woman who had been silenced for twelve years.
And that woman was finally ready to speak.
