Chapter 16 - The Cracks in the Gilded Mirror

The honeymoon period was a dream of Mediterranean sunsets and quiet mornings on the deck of a private yacht.
But reality has a way of finding you,
even in the middle of the ocean.
We returned to Chicago to find that Apex Bio had not gone quietly into the night.
A new CEO had taken over—Marcus Thorne,
the same man Chloe had been meeting in the garden.
And he had filed a massive lawsuit against Richard,
claiming that the "miraculous recovery" was a fraud,
a calculated move to manipulate the stock market.
“He’s claiming I was never drugged,”
Richard said,
throwing a stack of legal papers onto the desk in our new home.
“He’s claiming you and I conspired to stage the whole thing to oust Ethan and take control.”
I looked at the documents,
my blood running cold.
The "evidence" included a series of photos—me and Richard in the garden,
me and Julian on the terrace,
and even old medical records of my father’s care.
“He’s attacking my professional history,”
I said.
“He’s saying I have a pattern of manipulating wealthy patients.”
“He’s trying to destroy your reputation to get to me,”
Richard said,
pacing the room.
“If he can prove you’re a fraud,
the board will be forced to reconsider the merger.”
But that wasn't the worst of it.
That evening,
I found an old letter in the back of a desk Richard had brought from the estate.
It was a letter from a woman named Sarah.
A woman who claimed to have been Richard’s first wife—a woman who had disappeared ten years ago.
The letter was a plea for help,
claiming that Richard’s family was "poisoning the air."
I felt a chill that had nothing to do with the air conditioning.
Had Richard been through this before?
And why hadn't he told me?
I sat in the dark,
the letter in my lap,
May you like
wondering if the man I had married was the hero I thought he was,
or if I had just traded one gilded cage for another.
