Chapter 18 - The Poisoned Legacy

The trial began in a storm of media attention.

The "Nurse of Winnetka" versus the "Billionaire’s Grieving Brother."

Marcus Thorne sat at the prosecution table,

looking like the hero of his own movie.

He called witness after witness—disgruntled former maids,

paid-off doctors,

and even Ofelia.

My mother-in-law stood on the stand and lied through her teeth,

claiming that I had always been "ambitious" and "calculating."

“She didn't care about the patient,”

Ofelia said,

wiping a fake tear.

“She only cared about the signature.”

I sat beside Richard,

my hand in his,

feeling the weight of the lies pressing in on us.

But when it was my turn to testify,

I didn't talk about the money.

I talked about Sarah.

The courtroom went silent as I produced the letter.

“This letter wasn't a plea for money,”

I said,

my voice ringing out in the hushed chamber.

“It was a warning.

A warning about a man named Marcus Thorne who was helping Ethan Vance hide the truth about a murder.”

Thorne stood up,

his face turning an ugly,

bruised purple.

“Objection!

This is irrelevant and hearsay!”

“It is relevant to the character of the man bringing this lawsuit!”

Julian shouted,

springing to his feet.

The judge banged the gavel,

but the damage was done.

The media were already typing.

The "fraud" wasn't me.

The fraud was the entire history of the Vance family’s enemies.

But as we left the courthouse that day,

a man approached me in the parking garage.

He handed me a small,

heavily encrypted flash drive.

“From the guest house,”

he whispered.

“The footage Ethan thought he deleted.”

I took it,

my heart pounding.

This was it.

The final piece of the puzzle.
