Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Reign

Two years later. Spring 2029.
The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was bathed in soft, amber light. Five hundred guests filled the hall for the annual Sterling-Russo Foundation Gala—a charity that had raised over one hundred million dollars for abused women and children across North America.
There were no corrupt judges in the room tonight. No politicians trading favors in shadowy corners.
The city had changed. Under the combined leadership of Nora Sterling-Russo and Dante Russo, Chicago’s business and maritime sectors had undergone a massive cleansing. The old syndicate structures had been dismantled, replaced by a legitimate, impenetrable economic powerhouse that prioritized safety, justice, and community investment.
Nora stood near the high glass windows overlooking Michigan Avenue, wearing a midnight-blue silk gown that matched Dante’s custom tuxedo.
Elena Vance walked up, holding a glass of sparkling water, looking relaxed and triumphant. "The federal audit on the state treasury was completed this afternoon, Nora. Every dollar stolen by the previous administration has been recovered and returned to the public school system."
Nora smiled, touching her glass to Elena’s. "Thank you, Elena. None of this would have been possible without you."
"It was my pleasure," Elena smiled, glancing over at Dante, who was holding court near the stage with a delegation of international trade leaders from London and Tokyo. "He still looks at you like you're the only person in the room, you know."
Nora looked across the crowded ballroom at her husband.
Even surrounded by foreign trade ministers and high-ranking officials, Dante’s grey eyes flickered toward her every few minutes, making sure she was safe, comfortable, and happy.
He murmured a polite excuse to the diplomats, stepping away and walking slowly across the polished floor toward her.
"Are you tired, my love?" Dante asked softly, wrapping his hand comfortably around hers. "We can leave whenever you're ready."
"I'm not tired at all," Nora smiled, leaning against his chest. "I was just thinking about the night you came into my father's house."
Dante’s expression softened, his fingers gently tightening around hers. "That was the night my real life started, Nora."

"Sir... can you come get me?" Nora quoted softly, a gentle, playful laugh escaping her lips.
Dante leaned down, kissing her temple with infinite warmth. "Every single time, Nora. For the rest of my life."
