Chapter 6 - The Rebuilding of Sterling

Six months later. June 2027.
The navy-blue ribbon stretched across the grand entrance of the newly renovated Sterling Maritime Terminal at the Port of Chicago, glittering under the bright summer sun.
Hundreds of port workers in high-visibility vests, city officials, foreign trade ambassadors, and press reporters gathered on the blacktop, backgrounded by massive blue container cranes unloading freight from a newly arrived European cargo liner.
Nora stood at the podium.
Her cast was long gone, leaving her left hand fully restored, wearing a thin, elegant platinum ring on her middle finger. She wore a tailored white trouser suit, her dark hair falling in rich waves over her shoulders, looking radiant, powerful, and entirely in her element.
Beside her sat Elena Vance and Marcus, while Dante stood slightly off to the side in a dark grey suit, watching her with that unyielding, proud devotion that everyone in Chicago had come to recognize.
"Fifteen years ago, Sterling Logistics was built on a dream of honest trade and fair wages for every worker on these docks," Nora announced into the microphones, her voice clear and resonant. "Today, we restore that dream. We have established a twenty-million-dollar health and education trust for every port worker's family in Illinois, funded directly from the company's executive profits."
The crowd of dockworkers erupted into deafening cheers, tossing their hard hats into the air.
Nora cut the blue ribbon with a pair of silver shears, signaling the official reopening of the port.
As the crowd surged forward to offer congratulations, Dante stepped up beside her, wrapping his arm securely around her waist and pulling her close against his side.
"You handle the press better than any politician I've ever paid off," Dante teased softly in her ear.
Nora laughed, leaning her head against his shoulder. "That's because I'm telling the truth, Mr. Russo."
"Speaking of truths," Dante murmured, slipping a small black velvet box into her jacket pocket. "We have a dinner reservation in Paris at nine PM tomorrow. The private jet leaves in two hours."
Nora reached into her pocket, her fingers touching the soft velvet box. She looked up into his grey eyes, her heart swelling with an overwhelming warmth. "Paris? I thought you said you didn't like French food."
"I don't," Dante smiled, his eyes burning with a deep, loving intensity. "But I like the idea of asking you to marry me under the Eiffel Tower."
Nora’s eyes widened with joy, her smile breaking brilliant and beautiful against the afternoon sun. "You don't have to wait for Paris, Dante."
Dante stopped, his breath catching. "Nora...?"
May you like
Nora reached up, taking his face in both her hands, pulling him down to kiss him deeply in front of every camera, every dockworker, and every news outlet in Chicago.
"Yes," she whispered against his lips as the crowd cheered even louder behind them. "A thousand times, yes."
