Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary of Two Hearts

ONE YEAR LATER

The private coastal villa in Amalfi, Italy, overlooked a sapphire-blue sea that stretched out to the warm horizon.

The gentle Mediterranean breeze blew through the open terrace doors, carrying the sweet scent of lemon trees and blooming bougainvillea.

Vincent sat in an ergonomic wooden lounge chair on the terrace, wearing a light linen shirt and white trousers. His physical therapy over the past year had yielded steady progress; while his lower legs remained paralyzed, his core strength, endurance, and overall health were better than they had been in his thirties.

A soft sound of running water came from inside the villa, followed by cheerful giggles.

Tessa walked out onto the terrace, wearing a sundress, carrying a tray with two tall glasses of fresh lemonade and a bowl of local olives. Her younger sister, Clara—now completely healthy and fully recovered from her medical procedures—was down on the private beach below, splashing happily in the warm water with a golden retriever puppy.

Tessa set the tray down on the small table and sat on the wide armrest of Vincent’s chair.

Vincent immediately wrapped his strong arm around her waist, pulling her close into his side. Tessa leaned her head against his shoulder, letting out a deep, contented sigh as she looked out over the glittering sea.

"Are you happy, Vincent?" Tessa asked softly, stroking his cheek with her fingers.

Vincent looked out at the peaceful blue horizon, then down at his wife, his dark eyes filled with a peace he had spent forty years searching for in vain.

"I spent my whole life thinking power came from making people fear me," Vincent said softly, his voice rich and full of warmth. "I thought strength was standing tall in a room full of soldiers."

He took her hand, intertwining his fingers with hers, pressing her hand against his chest where his heart beat steady and strong.

"I was wrong," Vincent whispered, looking deep into her eyes. "True strength was the woman who walked into a dark room when everyone else fled. The woman who looked at a broken man and treated him like a king every single day."

Tessa smiled, leaning down to press her lips against his in a deep, sweet, and everlasting kiss under the warm Italian sun.

The bullet had taken his legs, but love had given him the world.
