Chapter 3 - The Light in the Dark

The week following the confrontation in the dining hall brought a storm of change to the Corvino estate.
Arya was gone, relocated to a luxury penthouse in Midtown funded by a final, non-negotiable severance settlement that severed all her ties to the Corvino name. Dominic had gone into hiding in Queens, desperately trying to rally support among rogue crews, but the family capos remained loyal to Vincent, recognizing that even in a wheelchair, the Don possessed a brain far more dangerous than any rival’s muscle.
Inside the estate, the cold, clinical atmosphere began to thaw.
Vincent spent six hours a day in his private study, managing his corporate holdings, reviewing ledger sheets, and conducting meetings through encrypted video feeds. Beside him, acting as his personal secretary, nurse, and confidante, stood Tessa.
Vincent had tripled her salary, moving her younger sister, Clara, into a top-tier private medical clinic in Manhattan to receive specialized care for her chronic kidney condition.
On a quiet Sunday afternoon, snow began falling softly over the estate grounds, covering the bare oak trees in a thick layer of white.
Inside the warm study, a fire crackled softly in the massive stone hearth.
Vincent was sitting in his wheelchair near the desk, reviewing a land acquisition contract, when a sudden, sharp spasm racked his lower legs. His muscles twitched violently—a painful, involuntary reflex caused by damaged spinal nerves.
Vincent gasped, dropping his pen, his face turning pale as sweat broke out across his forehead.
Tessa instantly set her notepad down, dropped to her knees beside his chair, and gently placed her warm hands over his trembling thighs. She didn't force the legs down; instead, she applied firm, steady pressure to specific pressure points near his knees, massaging the cramped muscles with practiced skill.
"Breathe, Vincent," she said softly, her voice calm and soothing amidst his pain. "In through your nose... out through your mouth. Let the muscle release."
Vincent followed her voice, taking deep, shuddering breaths. Slowly, after two agonizing minutes, the violent spasms subsided, leaving his legs limp once more.
He leaned back against his leather headrest, breathing heavily, his dark eyes looking down at the young woman kneeling at his feet. Her brown hair had pulled loose from her knot, falling softly around her face. Her warm hands were still resting gently on his knees, comforting him.
"Does it disgust you?" Vincent asked rasply, his voice filled with a rare, raw vulnerability. "Seeing a man who used to rule a city reduced to muscle twitches and dead limbs?"
Tessa looked up at him, her dark brown eyes clear, honest, and filled with a warmth that went straight to his heart.
"You aren't reduced to anything, Vincent," she said softly, her thumb gently stroking the fabric over his knee. "I see a man who fought his way back from a bullet that was supposed to kill him. I see a man who protects his people, who took care of my sister when no one else cared, and who has more courage in his pinky finger than those cowards who abandoned him."
Vincent stared at her, his breath catching in his throat.
Slowly, hesitatingly, as if afraid she might pull away, Vincent reached down with his large, calloused hand and gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers brushed against her cheek—soft, warm, and trembling slightly.
Tessa didn't pull away. She leaned slightly into his touch, her gaze locking onto his with an intensity that made the quiet study feel completely weightless.

"Tessa..." Vincent whispered, his voice deep and thick with unspoken emotion.
"I'm here, Vincent," she answered softly. "I'm not going anywhere."
