Chapter 4 - WHISPERS IN SILICON VALLEY

By month five of my pregnancy, my belly had grown round and full. In our secure penthouse overlooking Boston Harbor, life had transformed into a sanctuary of quiet focus and unyielding determination.

With Arthur Vance handling the corporate maneuvers, we formed Aegis Core—a next-generation decentralized cloud infrastructure built on the advanced patents my grandfather and I had refined over a decade. While Reid was spending Ashford Global’s cash reserves on private aviation, PR campaigns, and Marissa’s couture wardrobe, the real institutional players in Silicon Valley and Wall Street were quietly redirecting their capital toward Aegis Core.

"Claire, look at this," Arthur said one morning, sliding a confidential intelligence brief across my desk.

I set down my teacup and scanned the document. It was an unauthorized wire transfer record from an offshore account linked to Julian Vance—Ashford Global’s fiercest corporate rival, a ruthless venture capitalist known for predatory takeovers.

"Marissa Blake has been meeting Julian Vance at private suites in Manhattan," Arthur explained, pointing to the surveillance logs. "Julian is backing a hostile short position against Ashford Global stock. When Reid tries to take the company public without the CoreLink patents, Julian plans to trigger a margin call, seize Reid’s voting shares, and force Ashford Global into liquidation."

I leaned back against the plush velvet armchair, feeling a distinct flutter as one of the twins moved inside me. "And Marissa is his inside operative?"

"She's playing both sides," Arthur nodded. "She gets Reid’s high-society status and whatever millions she can extract before the wedding, and if the ship sinks, Julian has promised her a seat on his luxury brand investment board in London."

I looked at the ultrasound photo pinned to my monitor—two tiny heartbeats, perfectly synchronized, growing stronger every day. Reid had abandoned us for a gilded illusion, blind to the predators circling his throne.

"Do we intervene?" Arthur asked.

"No," I said softly, my voice firm with resolve. "Reid needs to see the exact cost of his vanity. We let Julian set his trap, but we ensure that when Ashford Global falls, we hold the master keys to rescue the thousands of employees who depend on that company for their livelihoods."

That afternoon, a high-ranking private investigator hired by Reid arrived in Boston, attempting to locate my residence. Within twenty minutes, Arthur’s security team had legally blocked his inquiries through a sealed non-disclosure trust and a formal federal privacy protection order.

Across the country, Reid was beginning to lose his sleep. The man who had walked out of the Minneapolis courthouse believing he had conquered the world was now trapped in a cage of his own making, desperately chasing the ghost of the woman he had treated like a warm-up.
