Chapter 6 - The Ambush and the Shield

On Friday afternoon, despite the heavy security at the manor, an emergency arose that couldn't be solved inside its stone walls.
Clara developed a sudden, high fever. Her skin was burning, and her breathing became shallow and rapid.
"It’s an acute pediatric ear infection," Dr. Evans evaluated over the phone. "I have the specialized antibiotics at my private downtown medical clinic, but they need to be administered immediately via IV drop to avoid febrile seizures."
"We move now," Damian ordered without hesitation.
A three-car armored convoy left Blackwood Manor ten minutes later.
Damian sat in the rear of the middle bulletproof SUV, holding Clara tightly in his arms, wrapping her in a cool damp towel. Noelle sat beside him, holding Leo and Mateo’s hands as they sat in their integrated child seats. Reyes drove the lead vehicle, while four armed guards followed in the rear.
The rain had returned, slicking the concrete highways of downtown Boston into shimmering ribbons of gray.
As the convoy turned down the narrow cobblestone alley leading to Dr. Evans' private medical suite in the Historic District, a heavy delivery truck suddenly backed out of a side garage, blocking the exit completely.
CRASH!
From behind, a black garbage truck slammed into the rear escort SUV, pinning it against the brick alley wall!
"Ambush!" Reyes roared through the comms system, pulling his sidearm. "Boss, duck down!"
Automatic rifle fire instantly shattered the quiet afternoon air!
THUD! THUD! THUD!
Heavy tactical rounds slammed against the reinforced bulletproof glass of Damian’s SUV, spider-webbing the thick material but failing to penetrate.
Noelle screamed, instinctively throwing her body over Leo and Mateo's car seats, covering them with her soft sweater. The two boys began to cry, terrified by the deafening thunder of gunfire.
Damian didn't panic. His face turned into a mask of lethal, terrifying calm.
He pulled Clara safely against his chest, transferring her into Noelle’s arms beneath the level of the leather seats. "Stay down, Noelle! Do not move!"
Damian reached beneath his seat, unlatching a hidden compartment to pull out a custom matte-black automatic submachine gun. He checked the magazine with cold, practiced precision.
"Reyes! Ram the delivery truck!" Damian ordered into his collar mic.
"Understood, boss!" Reyes slammed the heavy SUV into gear, flooring the accelerator.
The three-ton armored vehicle roared forward, its reinforced steel bumper smashing into the side of the delivery truck with a deafening screech of tearing metal! The alley opened up just enough for passage.
Four masked gunmen in black tactical gear stepped out from the side alleys, raising their rifles to fire directly at the driver's side window.
Damian kicked his door open.
Using the heavy bulletproof door as a shield, Damian stepped out into the pouring rain. His weapon barked in short, deadly three-round bursts.
PAK! PAK! PAK!
Two attackers dropped instantly to the wet cobblestones. A third was thrown backward as Reyes fired through the windshield.
The fourth gunman, realizing the assault had failed, raised his weapon toward the rear passenger window where Noelle was hiding with the babies.
"No!" Damian roared.
Before the gunman could pull his trigger, Damian closed the distance in two explosive strides, grabbing the barrel of the attacker's rifle, twisting it violently, and driving a devastating right hook straight into the man's jaw.
The gunman collapsed unconscious onto the pavement.
Silence returned to the alley, broken only by the hum of the idling engine, the falling rain, and the quiet whimpers of the babies inside.
Damian stood in the rain, his suit jacket soaked, his weapon lowered, his chest heaving. He turned slowly and looked into the SUV.
Noelle was trembling, her body still completely covering all three children, protecting them with her own life.
Damian stepped up to the door, setting his weapon aside and reaching into the vehicle. He didn't say a word. He pulled Noelle into his broad chest, his large arms wrapping around her and the children in a fierce, iron grip.
"You're safe," Damian whispered into her wet hair, his voice shaking with a rare, raw emotion. "I've got you. I've got all of you."
May you like
Noelle buried her face into the crook of his neck, breathing in his scent of rain, leather, and woodsmoke.
In that terrifying moment, amid the smoke and bullet casings, Noelle realized something profound. Damian Marchetti was not just the man who shared her children’s blood. He was the man who would tear down hell itself to keep them safe.
