Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the Room

The screaming of the monitors faded into a dull, rhythmic thud.
I was not dead.
My chest burned with the violence of the defibrillator, and my throat was raw from the intubation tube, but I was anchored back in my broken body.
The room was quiet now. The doctors had stabilized me, whispering about a miraculous return from the brink.
But the real miracle was that Derek and Sloane were gone. They had fled the room when the alarms started, terrified that their cruel little secret would be exposed to the medical staff.
I kept my eyes closed. The darkness behind my eyelids was my only shield.
If they knew I was awake, if they knew I had heard everything, they would find a way to finish the job. My advance directive gave Derek the power to pull the plug.
I had to play dead until I could fight.
Suddenly, the door clicked open.
It was not the heavy, hurried step of a nurse. It was the slow, deliberate stride of leather shoes on linoleum.
A scent drifted over me. Not the cheap cedar and amber I had bought for Derek, but something sharper. Bergamot, smoke, and expensive ink.
"You can open your eyes, Elena," a deep, smooth voice murmured. "The rats have scurried away for the night."
My breath hitched.
Slowly, painfully, I fluttered my eyelids open.
The man standing at the foot of my bed did not belong in a hospital. He looked like he belonged in a boardroom, destroying lives with a stroke of a pen.
He was tall, dressed in a midnight-blue suit that screamed bespoke, with eyes the color of a winter ocean. He held a tablet in his hand.
"Who are you?" I croaked, my voice sounding like crushed glass.
"My name is Julian Vance," he said, stepping closer. "And I believe your fiancé is currently trying to sell me his architecture firm using your trust fund as collateral."
Julian Vance. The billionaire developer. The man who owned half of Manhattan's skyline.
"Why are you here?" I whispered, my heart rate picking up on the monitor.
Julian reached out, his long fingers gently resting on the edge of my bed. "Because I own this hospital, Elena. And when my VIP floor security flagged a woman trying on a wedding dress in a dying patient's room, I got curious."
He tapped his tablet, and the screen illuminated his sharp jawline. "I heard everything they said. The question is, what are you going to do about it?"
I looked at this stranger, this dangerous, powerful man, and a cold fire ignited in my chest.
May you like
"I am going to destroy them," I said.
Julian smiled. It was a terrifying, beautiful smile. "Good. Then let's make a deal."
