Chapter 9 - The Phoenix Rises

The next six months were a blur of incredible success for Claire.
With the dead weight of the Harrington family finally removed, she thrived.
She officially took the reins of Whitmore Global and led the company into its most profitable quarter in history.
But more importantly, she built a life that she loved.
She bought a beautiful, secure penthouse for herself and Lily.
She hired the best tutors for her sister and made sure Lily never had to worry about money again.
Claire also launched a massive charitable foundation in her mother's name.
The foundation provided housing and education for single mothers across the city of Chicago.
She was no longer hiding her light to make a weak man feel tall.
She was shining brilliantly, illuminating the whole city.
One afternoon, Daniel Mercer walked into her office with a final report.
"The Harrington liquidation is complete, Claire," Daniel stated.
"The mansion was sold to a foreign investor."
"The company assets have been absorbed."
Claire looked out the window at the sprawling city below.
"And Ethan?" she asked, her voice completely detached.
"He is currently working as a mid-level manager at a logistics firm in the suburbs," Daniel replied.
"Margaret lives with him in a two-bedroom apartment."
"They are heavily in debt and struggling to make rent."
Claire closed her eyes for a brief moment, letting the final piece of the past float away.
She didn't feel joy at his misery, but she felt a profound sense of justice.
"Thank you, Daniel," she said softly.
"Close the file."
"We are done looking backward."
Daniel smiled warmly.
"Yes, ma'am."
"By the way, your dress for the charity gala tonight has arrived."
Claire turned back to her desk, a genuine smile lighting up her face.
