Chapter 4 - The Ultimate Reveal

The chair completed its turn.
Claire sat there.
She was wearing a tailored black Saint Laurent suit that cost more than Ethan’s car.
Her hair was sleek, her makeup was flawless, and her posture screamed absolute dominance.
She rested her elbows on the armrests and steepled her fingers, staring back at them.
The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush a man’s chest.
Ethan stopped breathing.
His face drained of all color, turning a sickly, ghostly white.
Margaret’s mouth fell open, her eyes bulging out of her head as if she were looking at a demon.
Brooke stumbled backward, her designer heel catching on the carpet.
"Claire?" Ethan choked out, his voice barely a whisper.
Margaret let out a sharp, nervous laugh.
"What is this?" she demanded, looking frantically around the room.
"Is this some kind of sick joke?"
"How did you get in here, Claire?"
"Security!" Margaret suddenly yelled, her voice shrill and panicked.
Daniel Mercer stepped out from the shadows of the room.
"Please lower your voice, Mrs. Harrington," Daniel warned coldly.
"You are speaking to the Chief Executive Officer and sole majority shareholder of Whitmore Global."
Margaret physically staggered as if she had been slapped across the face.
"No," Margaret gasped, clutching her chest.
"That's impossible."
"She's a nobody!"
"She lived in a dirty apartment!"
"Her mother was a waitress!"
Claire finally spoke, her voice smooth, calm, and terrifyingly cold.
"My mother was a waitress, Margaret."
"But my father was Alexander Whitmore."
"He built this city, and he built this company."
"And when he died, he left every single penny to me."
Ethan stared at Claire, his mind completely breaking under the weight of this reality.
The woman he had forced to sign divorce papers just twelve hours ago was a billionaire.
The woman he had allowed his mother to insult was the most powerful person in the room.
"Claire," Ethan said, taking a desperate step forward.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Claire’s eyes locked onto him with zero emotion.
"Because I wanted a husband, Ethan, not a gold digger."
"And it seems my father was right."
"Without the promise of money, your loyalty evaporated."
Brooke was shaking now.
"This is illegal," Brooke stammered.
"You can't just hide your identity!"
Claire turned her sharp gaze to the mistress.
"Actually, Brooke, there are no laws against humility."
"But there are laws against fraud."
May you like
"Which brings us to why you are all standing in my office today."
Claire picked up a red pen from her desk.
