Chapter 8 - The Letter My Mother Never SentSix months later, Clara received a letter.

It was from Julian Moretti.
Written before his death.
The letter explained everything.
He had known Clara was innocent.
He had known Vincent was alive.
And he had known Moretti would eventually need the truth.
But the final paragraph was addressed to his son.
Julian, if you are reading this, you have probably spent years believing strength means never needing anyone.
I was wrong too.
Your mother loved you.
I loved you.
And I hope one day you understand that protecting a family does not mean building walls around them.
It means letting them inside.
Moretti read the letter twice.
Then he walked outside.
I found him sitting beside the fountain.
“Are you sad?”
“A little.”
“Why?”
“Because I wish I'd heard this sooner.”
I sat beside him.
“You heard it now.”
He smiled.
“You're right.”
That night, he asked Clara something he had never asked before.
“Will you stay?”
She looked at him.
“Where else would I go?”
“Here.”
He hesitated.
“With us.”
Clara looked at me.
I nodded.
She smiled.
“Okay.”
