Chapter 7 - The Empire That FellThe newspapers called it the largest organized-crime investigation New York had seen in years.

Companies collapsed.

Accounts were frozen.

Politicians resigned.

Men who had once feared Moretti began talking.

But Moretti did something no one expected.

He cooperated.

He turned over records.

He dismantled the illegal operations.

He sold businesses connected to crime.

Then he rebuilt the legitimate parts of the empire.

Logistics.

Real estate.

Restaurants.

Construction.

He kept the employees.

He paid every worker who had been cheated.

He created a foundation in his father's name.

And he made one promise publicly.

“No child connected to this family will ever grow up believing they are alone.”

Clara didn't trust the transformation at first.

Neither did I.

But he proved it every day.

He came to breakfast.

He attended school meetings.

He learned how to braid hair.

Badly.

He burned pancakes.

Frequently.

He once spent forty minutes searching for Mr. Buttons because I had accidentally left the rabbit in the refrigerator.

But he showed up.

Every time.

One evening, I asked him:

“Are you still a mafia boss?”

He looked at me.

“No.”

“What are you now?”

He smiled.

“Your guardian.”

I thought about it.

“Can I call you something else?”

“What?”

“Dad.”

He went completely still.

Clara looked at him.

His eyes filled with tears.

He nodded.

“You can call me anything you want.”

May you like

I hugged him.

For the first time in my life, I understood what home meant.
