Zariah placed her crystal glass down on the mahogany table, the sound barely registering against the acoustic quiet of the room. She reached up, her fingers gently brushing the simple diamond pendant resting against her collarbone—the enduring symbol of where she started and how far she had climbed.
She walked over to the private double doors, picked up her wool coat, and turned off the desk lamp. The office dissolved into shadows, save for the ambient city lights reflecting off the polished glass. She stepped out into the hallway, hearing the soft, familiar click of the magnetic locks engaging behind her.
She didn't look back. She walked toward the elevator, stepping forward into the quiet, sovereign eternity she had built entirely on her own terms.
