As the predawn hours began to paint the eastern sky in faint streaks of pale blue and silver, Zariah stood once more by the thirty-second-floor window, looking down at the awakening streets of Chicago.
The morning rush hour was just beginning to stir, lines of yellow cabs and commuter vehicles tracing familiar patterns through the urban canyons.
