Chapter 17 - The Hardware Hijack

The line went dead, leaving the kitchen in a heavy, suffocating silence. Julian stared at me, sheer terror masking his features for a fraction of a second before his protective instincts overrode it. Arthur Kensington wasn't a street-level criminal; he was an untouchable banker who washed the blood off the money for every dictator and syndicate on the planet. He operated completely above the law.
“He has the global banking authorities in his pocket, Evelyn,” Julian whispered. “If he flags our accounts for terrorism, we won't even make it to a courtroom. They’ll raid the estate by midnight.”
“Let them try,” I said, standing up. “Arthur thinks he’s playing a financial game. He doesn't realize he just declared war on a digital architect.”
I turned our twelve-square-meter kitchen into an impenetrable, fortified war room. I pulled my primary encrypted laptops from the concealed steel drawers beneath the island. Arthur was using quantum-encrypted algorithms to hold my firm hostage. But as I dove into the raw data, I realized the breach wasn't just software.
“He didn't hack our network,” I told Julian, my fingers flying across the keys in a blur of motion. “He hijacked our hardware supply chain. The servers we imported last month for the new expansion—they have parasitic microchips embedded on the motherboards.”
I immediately launched a deep system memory diagnostic, pushing the central processing units to their absolute limits to isolate the foreign hardware signatures. The tension in the room was palpable. If Arthur’s system detected the anomaly, the trap would snap shut, and my foundation would be permanently destroyed.
“He’s using enterprise-level AI design platforms to fabricate the transaction records for the ghost office,” I murmured, watching the cascading lines of code. “It’s flawless. High-resolution, mathematically perfect forged documents. But even the most sophisticated AI has a blind spot.”

At 11:42 PM, the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green.
“I bypassed his hardware lock,” I whispered, a dark, predatory smile touching my lips. “I have direct administrative access to the Kensington-Vanguard Depository. And Arthur doesn't even know I’m looking at his books.”
