Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

Three months later.

The divorce was finalized on a crisp autumn morning. I walked out of the courthouse holding Lily’s hand, the warm Texas sun breaking through the clouds.

We didn't look back.

Mark had moved back into a small, cramped studio apartment across town, completely alienated from his family, facing massive legal fees and the permanent stain of a criminal investigation. Danielle was awaiting trial, abandoned by everyone she had manipulated over the years.

As for me?

The commercial building was generating steady rental income, fully secured under my private trust, ensuring that Lily’s college fund and my future were ironclad. My home was peaceful, filled with laughter, honest conversations, and absolutely zero room for toxic whispers.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, my brother David and little Emma came over for a barbecue.

Emma was helping me in the kitchen, carefully arranging sliced tomatoes on a platter while I marinated the chicken.

“Aunt Rachel?” Emma asked, looking up with a bright grin.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Can we make chicken every weekend? Yours is way better than anything my mom cooks.”

I laughed out loud—a rich, genuine sound that echoed off the kitchen walls, filling the house with warmth and light.

“Every single weekend, Emma,” I promised, handing her a napkin. “I promise.”
