Chapter 9 - The Settlement Offer

By the end of the month, Mark’s legal defense had completely collapsed.

Fiona Cartwright called me into her office to review the final settlement proposal drafted by Mark’s frantic defense attorney.

“He’s giving up everything, Mrs. Thompson,” Fiona said, a triumphant smile touching her lips. “To avoid criminal prosecution and a guaranteed prison sentence for the forgery charges, Mark has agreed to sign a total relinquishment of all marital property claims, full custody rights favoring your primary petition, and a complete dissolution of the LLC. The commercial building is fully restored to your name, and the frozen funds are returning to your trust account.”

“And Danielle?” I asked.

“The district attorney’s office is pursuing felony indictment charges against her for conspiracy to commit wire fraud,” Fiona replied smoothly. “She’s facing up to five years. Her brother’s signed affidavit threw her entirely under the bus.”

It was the ultimate betrayal of the toxic alliance that had tried to destroy me. Mark, trying to save his own skin, had finally turned on his sister, proving that the selfish bond they shared was built on quicksand.

“I’ll sign,” I said, picking up the heavy silver pen.

I signed my name cleanly, clearly, and decisively across every single page. No hesitation. No regret. Just the final stroke of a pen closing a very dark chapter of my life.
