Chapter 8 - The Bait

Using Brenda's burner phone, which he had pocketed from her safe, Marcus drafted a carefully worded text to Captain Miller.
Found the backup. I have the photo of you and Garza. Bring 500k to the old copper smelting plant on Route 9, or it goes to the State Attorney General. Come alone.
It was a classic shakedown. Miller wouldn't believe Marcus wanted money, but he would believe Marcus wanted a face-to-face to negotiate his life and his son's safety. Miller couldn't resist the chance to eliminate the threat permanently.
Marcus and Sarah spent the day rigging the smelting plant. It was a massive, rusted cathedral of corrugated iron and broken glass. They set up high-definition cameras hooked to cellular transmitters, feeding directly to a secure server Sarah had leased offshore.
"When he admits to it," Marcus instructed, "you blast the feed to every news station in Phoenix, the AG's office, and internal affairs simultaneously. Flood the zone so they can't cover it up."

Sarah checked her weapon. "And what if he just shoots you?"
"That's why I have you in the rafters," Marcus said, strapping a Kevlar vest over his chest. "Don't miss."
