Chapter 7 - Into the Badlands

Marcus couldn't risk returning to the hospital. He had Sarah arrange for Leo’s transfer under an alias, moving him to a private clinic run by a doctor who owed Marcus his life.
Marcus drove into the deep desert, hiding out in an abandoned silver mine he knew from his days as a rookie patrolman. Sarah met him there at dawn, a cloud of dust trailing her Jeep.
She tossed him a ruggedized laptop. "My cyber guy worked all night. It cost me every favor I have."
Marcus opened the laptop. There, grainy but unmistakable, was the photo Leo had taken. It showed the dry wash behind the clubhouse. Captain Miller was clearly visible, his state badge reflecting the moonlight. He was handing a duffel bag to a heavily tattooed man Marcus recognized as Hector 'El Cuchillo' Garza, a known cartel lieutenant.
"It's enough for a federal indictment," Marcus said, a grim smile touching his lips. "But we can't take this to the local FBI field office. Miller has friends there, too."
