Chapter 1 - The Sound of Sirens

The heavy steel padlock hit the concrete patio with a dull, heavy thud. Marcus Vance didn't wait to see it roll. He dropped the shears and scooped Leo into his arms. The boy was terrifyingly light, his skin burning through Marcus’s uniform shirt.

"Stay with me, Leo. Breathe, buddy. Just breathe." Marcus’s voice was a low, desperate rumble. He fumbled in his tactical vest, pulling out the spare emergency inhaler he always carried. He pressed it to Leo’s lips, forcing the medication into his son's seizing lungs.

Brenda Carmichael didn't flinch. She adjusted her designer sunglasses against the harsh Arizona sun. "You are interfering with a sanctioned Neighborhood Watch disciplinary action, Deputy Chief. I have it all documented."

Marcus turned slowly, the predatory stillness of a veteran cop settling over him. He didn’t shout. The quiet in his voice was far more dangerous. "If his heart stops, Brenda, I'm not arresting you. I'm ending you."

He carried Leo to the patrol SUV, ignoring Brenda's squawking protests. As he loaded his son into the back, the air conditioning blasting, his trained eyes caught the glint of glass from the neighbor's eaves. A trail camera. Pointed right at his patio.

They had been waiting for him.

He slammed the SUV door, hit the sirens, and tore out of the subdivision. The asthma monitor’s erratic beeping slowly stabilized as the cold air and medication did their work. But Marcus's own heart was hammering a furious rhythm. This wasn't a petty HOA dispute. This was an ambush.
