Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at Fulton Market

My architectural firm, Carter Designs, was located on the third floor of a converted brick warehouse in Fulton Market. It was my sanctuary—a place filled with natural light, draft tables, scale models, and the fresh scent of cedar wood and trace paper.

At 10:00 AM, my assistant, Sarah, walked into my glass-walled private office looking visibly shaken.

“Nia... there’s someone here to see you,” she whispered, holding her clipboard like a shield. “He didn't make an appointment, but... the security guards down in the lobby didn't even try to stop him.”

I didn't need to ask who it was. I could feel the change in the air pressure before he even stepped into view.

Luca walked through the glass doors.

He didn't look like the pristine, untouchable billionaire from the magazine covers. His dark hair was slightly messy, his expensive tie was loosened at the collar, and there were dark circles of exhaustion under his eyes. But what shocked me most was the expression on his face.

He looked at me as if I were a miracle he had no right to behold.

“Leave us, Sarah, and close the doors,” I said softly.

Sarah nodded quickly and pulled the sliding glass doors shut behind her, giving us total privacy.

I stood behind my heavy wooden drafting desk, crossing my arms over my chest. “You shouldn't be here, Luca. If Evelyn sees your car parked outside—”

“Evelyn is gone,” Luca said, his voice hoarse. He walked slowly toward my desk, stopping just short of the edge. “I filed for an annulment this morning. Dr. Sterling is currently in police custody.”

My arms uncrossed slightly. I stared at him, shocked. “What are you talking about?”

“He confessed, Nia,” Luca whispered, tears shining in the corners of his dark eyes. “He confessed that Evelyn’s family paid him to falsify your fertility records six years ago. You were never infertile. You were completely healthy. They tricked me... they made me believe we couldn't have a family so I would let you go.”

The room began to spin. The floor beneath my feet felt as though it were tilting.

Six years.

Six years of carrying the silent, crushing weight of feeling inadequate. Six years of remembering the pitying looks from his high-society mother. Six years of believing my body had failed the man I loved.

“A lie?” I breathed, my hands gripping the edge of the desk so hard my knuckles turned white. “It was all a lie?”

“Yes,” Luca choked out. He reached across the desk, grabbing my hand. His fingers were shaking. “I was a fool, Nia. A blind, arrogant fool. I was so consumed by building an empire, so buried in my own disappointment, that I didn't fight for you. I didn't question the doctor. I let them drive a wedge between us.”

I pulled my hand out of his grip, stepping back.

“Nia, please—”

“Do you think that makes it better, Luca?” I asked, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes, burning my skin. “Do you think knowing it was a lie fixes what you did to me?”

Luca flinched. “I know I broke your heart—”

“No!” I shouted, the fury rising from the deepest parts of my soul. “You didn't just break my heart, Luca! You abandoned me! You stopped looking at me as your wife and started looking at me like an investment that failed to yield a return! You walked out of that kitchen because you didn't have the courage to love a woman who couldn't give you an heir!”

“That’s not true!” Luca pleaded, his chest heaving. “I loved you!”

“If you loved me, you would have stayed!” I cried out. “You would have held my hand through the pain! We could have adopted! We could have built a life together! But the moment you thought I was broken, you emotionally checked out. You let me sit in that penthouse in total silence for months until you finally threw me away!”

Luca stood there, taking every single word like a blade to the chest. He didn't defend himself. He couldn't.

“And then,” I continued, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper, “I found out I was pregnant with twins six weeks after you signed the divorce papers. Do you have any idea what it was like to lie in a hospital room in Maine, holding two newborns, knowing their father had traded us in for a shinier, more convenient life?”

“Nia... please,” Luca fell to his knees on the hardwood floor of my office. The billionaire titan of Chicago, begging at my feet. “Let me make it right. I will give you everything. My fortune, my name, my life. Just let me be a father to Leo and Maya. Let me be the man I should have been.”

May you like

I looked down at him, my heart aching with a toxic mix of old love and lingering agony.

“You can’t buy your way back into their lives, Luca,” I said softly. “And you certainly can’t buy your way back into mine.”
