Chapter 4 - The Shattered Mirage

The storm outside matched the tempest inside Luca’s chest as he drove his dark armored SUV through the iron gates of Dr. Robert Sterling’s private estate in Lake Forest at dawn.
He didn't knock. Marcus bypassed the electronic lock on the front door in ten seconds flat.
Dr. Sterling, an elderly man in a velvet dressing gown, was drinking coffee in his sunroom when Luca barged in, backed by two towering security guards.
“Luca!” Sterling gasped, dropping his porcelain cup, sending dark liquid splashing across the Persian rug. “What is the meaning of this intrusion? If this is about Evelyn—”
Luca moved like a striking viper. Before the old man could finish his sentence, Luca had slammed him against the glass wall of the sunroom, his hand gripping the front of Sterling’s robe so tightly the fabric groaned.
“Six years ago,” Luca hissed, his silver-flecked eyes burning with unholy fury. “You sat across from me in your office and told me my wife had severe, irreversible uterine scarring. You told me carrying a child would be impossible for her.”
Sterling went pale, his lips trembling. “Luca... medical diagnoses are complex—”
“You lied to me!” Luca roared, shaking the doctor violently against the glass. “You tampered with her files! You changed the lab results! Evelyn’s family paid you, didn't they? They knew I wanted a family. They knew if I thought Nia couldn't give me one, the cracks in my marriage would widen!”
“I... I was forced!” Sterling whimpered, clutching at Luca’s wrists. “Evelyn’s father owed millions to offshore creditors! They needed the Moretti merger! Evelyn came to me... she said you two were already drifting apart! She said Nia didn't belong in your world!”
Luca let go of the doctor so abruptly the old man collapsed onto his knees, sobbing and gasping for air.
Luca looked down at him with absolute disgust. “You destroyed my family for money. You robbed me of five years with my children. You let the woman I loved suffer under the weight of a lie.”
“Luca, please—”
“Marcus,” Luca commanded without turning around. “Deliver all the raw server logs to the State Attorney General and the Medical Board. I want his license revoked by noon, his assets frozen by dinner, and a criminal indictment filed by tomorrow morning.”
“Right away, sir.”
Thirty minutes later, Luca arrived back at his Gold Coast penthouse.
Evelyn was in the master bedroom, packing a designer suitcase with a furious, defiant look on her face. “I won't be disrespected, Luca!” she snapped as he walked in. “You made a scene yesterday, and now you disappear all night? I am your wife!”
Luca stood in the doorway, looking at her as if she were a piece of garbage stuck to the bottom of his shoe.
“You’re not my wife,” Luca said smoothly, pulling a crisp stack of legal documents from his coat pocket and throwing them onto the bed. “You’re a criminal.”
Evelyn stopped, her eyes dropping to the papers. Petition for Immediate Annulment on Grounds of Fraud and Criminal Conspiracy.
“What is this joke?” she demanded, attempting a nervous laugh.
“Dr. Sterling confessed twenty minutes ago,” Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “I know about the altered lab reports. I know about the IP addresses from your father’s house. I know everything, Evelyn.”
The color drained from her face, leaving her looking hollow and pathetic. “Luca... listen to me... she wasn't right for you! She was a simple designer! She couldn't handle your world! I did it for us!”
“Get out,” Luca said quietly.
“Luca—”
“If you are still in this building in ten minutes, I will have the police arrest you for corporate espionage, medical fraud, and conspiracy,” Luca warned, stepping aside to leave the door open. “Your black cards are canceled. Your cars are impounded. The Shaw family accounts are being frozen as we speak. You have ten minutes to leave my sight forever.”

Evelyn stared at him, realizing that the cold, ruthless billionaire she had tried to manipulate had finally unlocked his true fury. She snatched her purse and fled the room without saying another word.
Luca stood alone in the massive, quiet penthouse. He walked into the empty nursery—a room he had locked five years ago and never reopened. He fell to his knees on the hardwood floor, put his head in his hands, and wept.
