Chapter 5 - THE CONFRONTATION AT THE SUMMIT

Three weeks later, the International Maritime Economic Summit was held in New York City at the United Nations Headquarters.

It was the most prestigious gathering of global trade leaders, shipping magnates, and sovereign wealth heads in the world.

Julian Pierce, Madison, and Ethan had scraped together their remaining resources to attend using their old security passes, hoping against hope to secure a foreign bailout from European investors before their final asset forfeiture was finalized.

The grand banquet hall was filled with diplomats, billionaires, and reporters.

Ethan stood near the bar, clutching a glass of scotch, his clothes looking cheap compared to the tailored tuxedos around him. Madison stood beside him, her face pale, her high-society friends completely ignoring her as they passed by.

Suddenly, the doors of the main hall were opened by UN protocol officers.

"Presenting Her Imperial Highness, Princess Caroline of Valeria, accompanied by Lord Sebastian Thorne, Duke of Westmere!"

The room fell into an eager silence.

Claire stepped into the hall. She was breathtaking. She wore an emerald-green silk gazar gown with a high lace neckline, her hair styled in an elegant royal updo secured by a delicate diamond tiara depicting the falcon crest of Valeria. Beside her walked Sebastian Thorne, looking dashing and powerful in his naval officer's white dress uniform.

Together, they moved through the crowd with absolute grace, greeting prime ministers, foreign ambassadors, and global tech leaders.

Ethan stared at her, his heart pounding violently in his chest. This was not the quiet conservator who cleaned dusty manuscripts in a dim museum. This was a sovereign monarch—regal, commanding, and infinitely out of his reach.

Driven by a desperate, delusional surge of panic, Ethan broke past the security cordon and rushed into the open floor toward her.

"Claire!" he yelled. "Claire, please! Stop!"

Sebastian Thorne stepped forward instantly, putting a firm, immovable hand on Ethan’s chest, stopping him dead in his tracks.

"Step back, sir," Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying military authority. "You are approaching a member of a sovereign royal family."

"Claire, it's me! It's Ethan!" he pleaded, his voice cracking as the entire banquet hall turned to watch the spectacle. "I made a mistake! Madison manipulated me! She lied to me about everything! I still love you, Claire! I'll leave her right now! We can go back to how things were!"

Behind him, Madison gasped in horror. "Ethan! How could you?!"

Claire stopped. She slowly turned around and walked toward Ethan, her emerald gown whispering softly against the marble floor.

She looked down at him—not with hatred, not with vengeance, but with profound, cool indifference.

"Go back to how things were, Ethan?" Claire asked quietly, her voice echoing in the silent hall. "You didn't love Claire Whitman when you thought she was ordinary. You rejected her because you thought she couldn't give you status, connections, or wealth. And now you beg Princess Caroline because you realize she holds the power to crush you."

"Claire... please..." Ethan sobbed, sinking to his knees on the polished floor.

"You told me at the river that you wanted a real life," Claire recalled softly. "Well, Ethan... this is reality. You made your choice at the altar of St. Catherine’s. Live with it."

She turned away from him without another glance.

Julian Pierce rushed forward, grabbing Madison’s arm as federal agents—who had been waiting for the summit to conclude—stepped forward with handcuffs.

"Julian Pierce, Madison Pierce," a lead agent announced. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud and tax evasion."

As Madison shrieked and Ethan sat weeping on the floor, the crowd stepped back, letting the law take its course. The betrayal that had started in a Boston cathedral had finally reached its absolute, inescapable conclusion.
