Chapter 4 - THE COLLAPSE OF PIERCE ATLANTIC

Back in Boston, absolute chaos reigned.

Within forty-eight hours of the scene at St. Catherine’s Cathedral, Pierce Atlantic’s stock price had plummeted by forty-five percent.

The sudden withdrawal of the Valerian Central Bank’s seventy-million-dollar credit line hit the company like a financial tsunami. Shipping containers belonging to Pierce Atlantic were frozen at every major European port under maritime court injunctions issued by Valeria.

Inside the mahogany-paneled corner office of Pierce Atlantic’s Back Bay headquarters, Julian Pierce was screaming.

"What do you mean we're insolvent?!" Julian roared, slamming his fists onto his massive oak desk.

Across from him sat his chief financial officer, sweating profusely, alongside Ethan Cole and Madison Pierce.

Ethan looked like a shell of a man. His hair was disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, and his suit wrinkled. After the city canceled his library contract due to the sudden loss of underwriting, three of his major architectural partners had pulled out of his firm. He was facing total financial ruin.

"Mr. Pierce, it's not just the credit line," the CFO stammered, holding up a stack of legal notices. "The Imperial Investment Fund of Valeria owns thirty-four percent of the commercial real estate leases in downtown Boston—including the building we are currently sitting in. They just issued an immediate notice of default based on our breached solvency ratios. We have twenty-four hours to vacate."

Madison sat in a leather chair, her hands trembling as she stared at her phone. Her social media accounts, once filled with envious comments from Boston’s elite, were now completely overrun with public mockery. Videos of the wedding incident—where Claire’s royal guards had knelt before her—had gone viral globally, accumulating over eighty million views.

The world knew Madison Pierce as the delusional social climber who had stolen a penniless architect from the future Empress of Valeria.

"Father, do something!" Madison wailed, her voice shrill with panic. "Call the Governor! Call our lawyers! This is illegal!"

"Illegal?!" Julian turned on his daughter with a face contorted by fury. "You foolish, arrogant girl! You ruined this family for an architect who couldn't even keep his own firm afloat! Do you have any idea who Claire Whitman actually is? She is Princess Caroline of Valeria! Her grandfather could buy our entire company with his pocket change and burn it for firewood!"

Ethan buried his face in his hands. "I didn't know... She drove a six-year-old Honda... She lived in a drafty apartment..."

"Because she was testing you, you idiot!" Julian shouted, throwing a glass paperweight against the wall, where it shattered into a hundred pieces. "And you failed! You traded an empire for a cheap affair!"

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the office opened.

Two marshals from the United States District Court stepped inside, accompanied by a sharp-looking female attorney in a gray power suit—Evelyn Vance, lead international counsel for the Valerian Royal House.

"Julian Pierce? Madison Pierce? Ethan Cole?" Evelyn asked calmly, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from her briefcase.

"Who the hell are you?" Julian gritted out.

"I represent Her Imperial Highness, Princess Caroline," Evelyn announced, placing the documents on the desk. "We are serving you with formal papers for federal fraud, corporate espionage, and intentional interference with contractual relations. Furthermore, Her Highness has authorized me to offer you one single exit."

Ethan raised his head frantically. "What exit? Please, I'll do anything! I'll apologize to Claire—I'll beg on my knees!"

Evelyn looked down at Ethan with pure, unadulterated contempt. "You won't be begging Her Highness for anything, Mr. Cole. The offer is simple: surrender all assets of Pierce Atlantic and Cole Architectural to the Imperial Trust to satisfy your debt defaults. In exchange, the Royal House will refrain from filing criminal charges regarding your illegal offshore maritime tax evasions."

May you like

"And if we refuse?" Julian gasped.

Evelyn smiled thinly. "Then you will all be bankrupt by midnight and in federal prison by Monday. You have two hours to decide."
