Chapter 2 - THE MOTORCADE THROUGH BOSTON

The exit was not a retreat; it was a deployment.
As Claire stepped out onto the granite steps of St. Catherine’s Cathedral, six heavy black armored Suburbans lined the street, flanked by four Boston police motorcycle escorts whose lights flashed red and blue under the grey autumn sky.
Reporters from the local news stations—who had originally come to cover the high-society wedding of Madison Pierce—were already scrambling with their cameras.
"Princess Caroline!" a reporter yelled, shoving a microphone toward the police barricade. "Is it true? Are you the Valerian royal heir?"
Claire paid them no mind. Marcus opened the rear door of the central armored vehicle, holding an umbrella over her head despite the lack of rain. It was pure royal protocol—a ritual she hadn't experienced in over thirty months.
Inside the vehicle, the scent of expensive calfskin leather and fresh orchids filled the air. Built into the center console was a secure video monitor. The screen flickered to life the moment the heavy door slammed shut, cutting off the noise of the screaming crowd outside.
On the screen sat Emperor Alexander Vale.
He was seventy-six years old, with silver hair brushed back cleanly, sharp grey eyes that missed nothing, and an imperial military tunic adorned with faint silver braiding. Despite his age, his posture was as rigid as iron.
"Caroline," the Emperor said, his voice deep and resonant through the encrypted audio link.
"Grandfather," Claire whispered, leaning her head back against the leather headrest. She felt a sudden, sharp ache in her chest, not of heartbreak, but of exhaustion. "I’m sorry. You were right."
"Do not apologize for having a good heart, my child," Alexander replied softly, his iron eyes softening with immense warmth. "You wanted to find out if human beings could love you for your soul rather than your crown. It is a noble test. It is simply unfortunate that the subjects you chose were swine."
Claire let out a small, breathless laugh. "Ethan thought I was ordinary. Madison thought I was weak."
"Then we shall educate them," the Emperor said coldly. "I have already instructed the Valerian Central Bank to call in the seventy-million-dollar liquidity line that Pierce Atlantic borrowed last winter to expand their shipping docks. Julian Pierce—Madison’s father—signed a personal guarantee clause on that loan. If he cannot cover it by noon tomorrow, his entire fleet will be seized by our naval authorities in the Atlantic."
Claire looked at her grandfather on the screen. "And Ethan?"
"Cole Architectural won the contract for the new city library because the Valerian Cultural Foundation secretly underwrote their liability insurance," Alexander revealed, a dangerous smile touching his lips. "I ordered that insurance pulled five minutes ago. Without it, the city of Boston will terminate his contract for breach of municipal code by nightfall."
Claire looked out the tinted window as the motorcade sped down Storrow Drive toward Logan International Airport. Boston was slipping away behind her—the city where she had tried so hard to be normal, where she had repaired manuscripts, eaten cheap pizza, and believed in love.

"I don't want to destroy them out of anger, Grandfather," Claire said quietly. "I want them to see the truth of what they chose."
"They chose greed over loyalty, Caroline," Alexander said sternly. "In Valeria, we call that treason. Now, come home. Your people have waited long enough for their Princess."
