Chapter 4 - The Safe House in Canton

The safe house was a non-descript brick rowhouse situated near the historic docks of Canton, Baltimore. From the outside, it looked like a run-down residential home with boarded-up windows and an overgrown lawn.

Inside, however, it was a high-tech fortress.

Reinforced steel plates lined the interior walls, bulletproof Kevlar curtains covered every window, and a full medical suite—complete with an operating table, heart monitor, and blood transfusion equipment—occupied what used to be the dining room.

Dr. Aris Thorne—a former military trauma surgeon who worked exclusively for the Romano family—was already waiting when the SUV pulled into the concealed rear garage.

"Get him on the table! Now!" Dr. Thorne shouted to two heavily armed guards who helped lift Alessandro from the vehicle.

For the next three hours, Catherine watched from the doorway as Dr. Thorne worked frantically to repair the damage to Alessandro’s abdomen. She refused to go to the guest bedroom upstairs until she knew he was stable. Logan had long since fallen asleep on a comfortable leather armchair in the corner of the medical room, holding his stuffed bear, guarded by two silent, broad-shouldered men in suits.

Catherine couldn't help but marvel at the strange reality she had been thrust into. Six hours ago, she was worrying about getting fired from her job as a floor nurse. Now, she was standing in a secret mafia bunker, watching a doctor sew up Baltimore’s most dangerous criminal, holding the key to a federal conspiracy that could bring down the FBI.

At 5:30 AM, Dr. Thorne finally stripped off his bloody gloves and let out a long sigh.

"He's stable," Dr. Thorne told Catherine, wiping sweat from his forehead. "The stitches are secure, and I've given him two units of whole blood. He’s tough as nails, but he needs rest."

"Thank you, Doctor," Catherine said quietly.

"Don't thank me, Mrs. Winters," Dr. Thorne said, looking at her with a serious expression. "Thank him. When Arthur Pendelton’s hit squad struck the hospital tonight, Alessandro could have used his secondary evacuation team to escape alone in a helicopter. He stayed behind to make sure you and your son were brought out safely."

Catherine looked at Alessandro, who was lying on the recovery bed, his dark chest rising and falling in a steady, peaceful rhythm.

She walked slowly over to his bedside, pulled up a small stool, and sat down.

As if sensing her presence, Alessandro’s eyelids flickered open. The dark fog of anesthesia was still in his eyes, but he cleared his throat, looking at her.

"You're... still here," he rasped.

"Where else would I go?" Catherine said, a faint, sad smile touching her lips. "My house is probably surrounded by federal agents, my job is definitely gone, and my dead husband turns out to be alive in Canada."

Alessandro let out a soft, dry chuckle that ended in a slight wince. "Welcome to my world, Catherine."

"Why did you do it, Alessandro?" Catherine asked softly, her hazel eyes searching his face. "Why did you risk your life to protect David two years ago? And why risk your life for me and Logan tonight?"

Alessandro was silent for a long moment. He looked up at the ceiling, the harsh LED lights reflecting in his dark pupils.

"Ten years ago," Alessandro began quietly, "when my father was alive, I was a different man. I was arrogant, reckless, and cruel. I thought power meant making people fear you. Then my younger sister, Isabella, fell in love with a civilian—an architect from Philadelphia."

Catherine listened intently, sensing the deep pain behind his words.

"My father hated him," Alessandro continued, his voice tight with ancient regret. "He thought the architect was a liability. One night, without telling me, my father had the man killed in a staged robbery. Two weeks later, Isabella took her own life."

A tear glistened in the corner of Alessandro’s eye, though his expression remained carved from stone.

"When I took over the family," Alessandro whispered, "I swore I would never become my father. When I saw how much David loved you... how much he talked about his pregnant wife and the life he wanted to build away from the shadows... I saw the life my sister was denied."

He turned his head to look at Catherine.

"I couldn't save my sister, Catherine," Alessandro said, his voice cracking with raw emotion. "But I sworn on my mother's grave that I would save David Winters. I promised him that one day... when Pendelton was buried... I would bring him back home to you."

Catherine felt a wave of profound emotion wash over her. The monster she had heard about in news whispers and hospital corridors didn't exist. Standing—or lying—before her was simply a man carrying the unbearable weight of his own scars, fighting to protect the only good thing he had left.

She reached out and gently covered his hand with hers.

"Thank you, Alessandro," she whispered.

Suddenly, the encrypted satellite phone on the bedside table began to ring with a sharp, piercing tone.

Alessandro picked it up immediately, pressing the speaker button.

"Boss?" Marco’s gravelly voice came through the speaker, heavy with background static and the sound of howling wind. "I made it to the secondary safe house in Wilmington. But we have a massive problem."

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed. "Speak, Marco."

"Pendelton traced the flight logs from the private airfield in Pennsylvania," Marco reported frantically. "He knows about the cabin in Alberta. His private mercenary team just boarded a transport plane out of Andrews Air Force Base."

May you like

Alessandro sat up straight, ignoring the sharp spike of pain in his abdomen. "How long do they have?"

"They will be in Canada in four hours," Marco revealed. "They are going to burn that cabin to the ground, Alessandro. They're going to kill David."
